I recently found out about Freecycle, and I love it! I got a little end table last week. It was already in pretty good condition, but I 'redid' it anyway, to match my bedroom.
We needed a new nightstand in our bedroom, ours was very old, falling apart, and the top was warped. It was quite an eyesore. So, I saw an ad on freecycle for this glass top end table, and decided that that would work just fine!
Luckily I was the first person to respond to the ad. As I said, the table was in really nice shape, but I did a little work, and made it something special for our bedroom.
Here are a couple shots, (I took the glass out), before I 'fixed' it up.

I sanded it down lightly, then wiped it off with a cheese cloth. Next, I took some left over paint from our bedroom wall, and painted the entire thing with it. I let that dry, and then painted a crackle medium over the entire surface. I followed the directions on the crackle bottle, and when it was just the right time, I painted a white top coat over the crackle. I turned out great! The original blue color showed through the cracks just perfectly!! I was really happy with the out come!
Here is a photo of the finished product!
And here is a closeup, so you can see the 'crackle' technique that I used.

I have heard SO much about Freecycle but I have not checked it out yet.
