I've got some bottle caps that I've painted with acrylic paint. They're going to be a part of one of my bottle cap belts, which involves them having thread across them in the shape of an X. I know that if I leave them as is, the paint will chip off, slowly but surely.
So I'm looking for recommendations of something I can coat the painted portion of the bottle caps with that will be resistant to near constant friction from thick cotton thread and also the belt loops on pants. I know that fingernail polish will wear off, and with it the paint, even if I get the "tough as nails" stuff. I'm sure there has to be a product that I can find that will work well. I just don't know much about coating paint, because painting is not at all my usual crafting medium.

Uou'd probably be best off using oil-based or acyrlic enamel. If the thread covers the bottle cap, not much of a design would show up anyway. You migh also try using metal primver first, but acrylics will not stick to any non-porous surface for very long unless they don't get wet or scratched.
You might consider using a laquer or varnish over the the threads to glue them down to the bottle caps. I'm not really clear on how your design works, but those are my suggestions. Good Luck
You might try clear fresco.
Clear spray paint for finishing.
Those are about my only thoughts.
Good Luck.
I think the rest said it all.
