To Joe and any one else who paints,
I said I can't paint; however, I never tried. I need a list of supplies a novice must have and I'll let you critique my work. Nutty? Well that's me. Gotta start somewhere.

Get a sketchpad, then draw, draw, draw!
After you have a book full of drawings (or painting ideas, if you will) start redrawing them in compositions as you might like to see them in painting form.
I suggest starting with acrylics. Buy a set of 6 or 8 tubes (you'll be shocked at the high price), then pick up the cheapest brushes you can find (Michaels and Ben Franklin carry sets of really reasonable brushes).
I would suggest using small gessoed boards at first.
Then...go for it!
Please post photos of the results! :)
Check out the painting isle at Michelles and decide what you want to use and how big you want to go. I agree, starting small is good to get the feel.
Don't be discouraged with sketching. But practice makes perfect.
Happy painting and let us see your results.
Marilyn, I only meant to use cheap brushes at first. But, it's true, expensive ones are worth the money....they last!
Since, I can't get pictures in, just e-mail me or leave message if something is unclear.
First would be sketching techniques
Second would be water color classes, but techniques you can use with all medium
But it would not only be exercises and learning you would create a painting each time.
pretend your like Picasso and have a Blue Period! It might be easier to start out.
