Another Shock

Yesterday, for the second time in two weeks, I received bad news. My best friend and popular Gather writer Rob Appell passed away.

The loss was sudden, unexpected and very shocking. I've updated his profile to reflect his passing and I will be posting some more information, including his self written biography.

Update: I just posted the more detailed story of what happened to Rob.

Scott, I had already sent you an email. I am so glad that you aren't facing this alone. You really have had so much to deal with and if I'm this shocked, I can't even imagine how you feel. I am so very sorry for your loss. He really loved you very much. I think you saved his life. Without you as his friend, he might have been gone long before this.

I was pretty surprised when I read about this earlier today from another gather member. So I can imagine what you're feeling. I'm so sorry you lost your best bud.

Oh my gosh.......noooooooooooo...........I just cannot believe this......what a terrible, terrible shock.........Scott, what happened to him? I am just so very, very sorry......words just are so inadequate.
I know that he will truly be missed a LOT here on Gather, as he had tons of friends.

I think I am going to be sick...you have no idea how much Rob helped me with my father's illness...he was such a good friend.

Oh my God. I am sick hearing this and sicker than when I heard it from another Gather member earlier today. I spoke to Rob not two weeks ago and he sounded like his usual fun loving self. His passing is also a shock to me and I know it will be to many others.

I will miss Rob terribly.

I've felt sick for two days. It took me half way through yesterday to stop shaking. I cry randomly throughout the day. (The latter is something that has been going on for the past two weeks now there is just a second reason.)

Yeah what Sue said. Just so hard to know how to help some one with grief. I just hope you won't disappear too. Might be good to talk it out here on gather with people who care about you.

Soctt: Take care of yourself my friend. Only time will help heal the pain and suffering you are experiencing. As sad and shocking Rob's passing is, you know he would have somehow found great humor in the way this all ended. :-( I'm sorry Scott, Rob was a good person. I'll always remember him with his LONG blond hair ... gothic look and being a DJ for the Wall in Seneca Falls... He would do the late show called the ROCK SHOP and afterwards (when i worked at burger kings) He would come in around midnight or so with his dark shades and I would sing to him "I wear my sunglasses at night" RIP BOB (as i've always known him) ROCK ON!!!!!!!

Hi Scott, It must have been hard to post this, but thank you for doing so. I haven't been on Gather for some time, so I wasn't aware how Rob was doing since he had been hospitalized. Rob was a very special man who brought much joy and laughter and tears (and arguments!) to us at gather through his writing. He was a very gifted writer, though he didn't see things that way. I will miss him so very much. He was always kind and encouraging to me and such a loyal and generous friend. I know he loved you very much. And we all loved and love him very much. He will always have a special place in my heart. Hugs to you. WE LOVE YOU ROB!

I just finished reading the more detailed article you wrote. I wanted to thank you for all the updates you gave us on him. He as missed while he was gone, and he'll be so missed now. gather will not be the same without him.

Rob was an endearing man. He could get right down dirty with the rest of us, be silly and goofy...you could almost hear the chuckles when he hit some of the posts. Rob was also one of the first people here I met (besides Laura C.) and one of the few who I let in. Rob will be missed by those who knew him, loved him and were proud to call him friend.

On no. This is the saddest news I could have gotten today. Yesterday I was thinking about Rob and about how I hadn't heard anything from him or his friends lately, so I searched you out and found/commented on your post from last week. He always had the best advice and I will miss him.

Scott, you don't know me but I am another one of the people who really enjoyed reading everything Rob wrote here on Gather.
After reading your more detailed article - I think Rob went exactly the way he wanted: no nursing home - independence as long as possible and when that was no longer possible, adios...
We have all lost a special friend - with your loss surely being the greatest. Big hug!

Oh, Scott, I am soo very sorry, I had no idea and never dreamed. I'd been missing him so and now my heart just aches.. I was worried about him, sent him something and heard nothing, I thought his Gather silence was protest and anger with the new rules and I was respecting that though readying his Thanksgiving cookies for the post. This is such a shock. God bless you and yours and thank you so very much for posting this, you were such a blessing to him and he loved you as much as any human can love another. You gave him so much, and with the Shim, he needed her, they needed each other. My deepest.................

rob has been missed during his illness........ i will, as other will, continue to miss him....i understand the how and the why he died..... i have been very close to that point myself... not long ago we lost another gather friend for much the same reason.....it happens and it is so painful to those left behind...... sigh
