As I've recently posted, my grandfather passed away Saturday night at his home in Westchester County, NY, just hours after I spent a few minutes with him as he lay in his bed, in his bedroom. He had been fighting melanom for the past 5-6 years, diabetes, and last summer he had a series of strokes and heart attacks. The doctors believe he may have had another small stroke a few weeks ago.
My sister (who is recovering from breast cancer--she had a double mastectomy at the beginning of the year and just finished her chemo treatment this week) was named executrix of the estate in his will and is handling his affairs. I'm helping her out where and to whatever capacity I can do so, especially as her condition still has her feeling quite weak and sick at times. She asked me if I would write grandpa's obituary, based on notes he had made over the years, and I agreed.
Here's a link to his obit, which I posted to my blog (there's a link back to this article at the end of the post, and you can return easily to comment here and on my blog):

I've been taking a lot of naps lately. I wake up and do something for an hour or two and then find myself completely exhausted. I take a nap for 2-3 hours and the cycle repeats. I've also had to take a few benzos to help me maintain my composure, which is very shaky and easily lost, even with the benzos. I'm only taking like one pill a day so I'm not overdoing anything. I was going to call my shrink and ask him to write a script so everything could be on the up and up but I'll have to do it tomorrow as there was just no time left today. NYC Gay Pride was on Sunday and obviously, I didn't participate at all. My father's moving from SC to GA today/tomorrow so he'll be flying up tomorrow night for the services. And this weekend is a 3-day holiday weekend which means many people will be leaving on Thursday, so unfortunately we're not expecting a big turnout for the funeral, despite my grandfather's standing in the community. All in all, it has been really bad timing.
So let me know what you think of my first obit. It's not something that I'd like to be writing a lot of. :p Here's the link again: http://petercfrank.blogspot.com/2008/06/sidney-j-frank-jr-obituary.html

God Bless
You did a wonderful job on the obit. You gave me a sense of the man and a feeling that his life was well lived. Reading it, I was reminded of my own grandparents who were active community members belonging to civic organizations and social clubs.
I cannot believe how much it cost to run an obituary. That is crazy! But I know when my Mom died you have to do what you have to do at the time. We have two papers here and the cost between them was like day and night. I winder why?
Great Job btw.
This is a little prayer or hymn that I like. I hope you like it too.

Going home. Going home. I'm a-going home.
Quiet-like some still day, I'm just going home.
It's not far, just close by, through an open door.
Work all done, cares laid by, Going to fear no more;
Mother's there expecting me, Father's waiting, too.
Lot's of folks gathered there. All the friends I knew.
Morning star lights the way, restless dream all done.
Shadows gone, break of day, real life just begun.
There's no break, there's no end, just a-living on;
Wide awake, with a smile, going on and on.
Going home. Going home, I'm just going home.
It's not far, just close by, through an open door.
