Hello, friends.
I am officially back on my medications for bipolar as of yesterday. I have mentioned to some of you that we couldn't afford most of my medication for bipolar, diabetes, asthma, bladder, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, anemia, CHF, GERD, and peripheral neuropathy since June, 2007. That was when the company my husband works for was bought out by a Canadian company. The first thing they did was change our BCBS health insurance policy. We had to begin weekly payments of about $80 for our share taken out of my husband's paycheck. That cut into our tight budget severely enough that I had to give up most of my meds (except the samples from the doctor's office). To make matters worse, he has not been working 40 hour weeks. They've been laying people off for a day each week in the past several months. Hubby has been laid off 3 times since December, each time a week long. So all this adds up to no medication for me.
I mentioned that I was taking some blood pressure, cholesterol, GERD, and diabetes medications from the doctor's sample "store." I am still doing some of that, too. But with our tax rebate, we used the form provided on a website called RX Outreach. One of you gave me the website (http://www.rxoutreach.com) and I checked it out. Then I took the form to my doctor and we picked out 4 medications on my huge meds list that I could get for $20 or $30 each for a 90 day supply. Well, my bag of meds came in yesterday! I was so excited.
To whomever it was that gave me the website, THANK YOU!!!
Today I'm experiencing the old side effects I can remember from taking these meds: woozy, dizzy, lightheaded, need to sleep, etc. and some dry mouth. Oh what fun.
We also picked up four more of my meds at Wal-Mart pharmacy that are $4.00 for 30 pills for 30 days. One of my meds is 60 pills for 30 days, so that one costs $8.00. So now I'm currently up to about 12 meds if you include my Advair and the over-the-counter 81 mg aspirin I take every day (doctor's orders). I still need iron meds for the anemia, but my recent bloodwork showed that my iron count is up to nearly normal now! That took literally years to recover from!
So I thought I'd let you know what's happening here.

We would not have qualified for those programs because we did have insurance. The minute my husband gets laid off, he'll lose his insurance, and THEN I'll contact the companies to check out their programs. But the ones I mentioned above are what we can use now. Praise God for that!
I'm so glad you and your doctor were able to work out an affordable solution to your prescription situation.
Blessings.
Yes, most pharmaceutical companies have hardship programs, but they are for people who do not have ANY insurance at all. Those of use who do have insurance but can't afford to use it, are OUT.
All your prayers are appreciated. It's been a very long and hard 9 months since last July (2007) when the new company took over. Our income suddenly dropped as they could not keep the employees working 40 hours a week. So our income was less than our basic bills each month. By the end of 9 months (just as we were getting our tax returns) we were on the edge of being kicked out of our rental house and losing our van. We had a negative amount in both checking accounts (and it took about $1,000 to bring everything up to $0.00!!!). As I wrote before we lived on $45/week groceries for 4 adults. Life has been hard!! But fortunately, the light is at the end of the tunnel now. More work is supposed to be coming in soon, and that means working longer hours again. I can't wait.
Congratulations!
