I was going to call this article Economics and Politics for Dummies, but not only might that insult some members inadvertantly, it would also be a copyright infringement, I'm sure! Anyway... I was reading some articles about how economics is stronger or more important than politics and it's my considered opinion that that is putting the cart before the horse.
Economics make politics. If you go to the very beginning of mankind crawling out of the primordial ooze and making social groups.... Community, society, civilization all centers around trade, bartering something we have for something we want or need... and having to get along because of it. It's part of the development of the species. We're learning to put other considerations first, but not all will learn at the same rate. And we'll always have those with differing opinions about what interests come first.
In regards to the article about Tibet -- As far as the US in Tibet.... there isn't much the US can do as far as Tibet goes unless Tibet wants a military presence to bolster any economic sanctions since sanctions alone don't work. And the minute we put troops over there, then what?
And as far as military might goes.... if you look at the mission statement of most armies of most countries, they state that they protect their citizens interests abroad and keep trade routes open and clear. It's a major reason why they were formed in the first place.
It would be nice if we could all just stop being the biological beings we are and not have needs, desires, emotional issues, good and bad judgement... all those things that make us who and what we are and get in the way of "peace on Earth". We have a lot more growth and development to go through before we get to that milestone. And we are still little more than infants in terms of developing as a species. Maybe a wee bit more developed than toddlers? Hard to say, but we've come a very long way in a relatively short time, and even though we've had many SERIOUS setbacks, we're still moving forward and making some progress. We each have our own small part to play.... and decisions to make about what rules we'll follow or ignore.
