While my husband was in the hospital I had the opportunity to read several books. One of the Books I read and thoroughly enjoyed was CAPTIVE ANGEL by our own Jerry Smith.
(Southamboyusa.gather.com)
The book was well written, kept my attention and was very enjoyable and entertaining, in fact I read it in one sitting. Anyone from middle school up will enjoy this book! I highly recommend this enjoyable read! 107 pages.
Becky Russell a prisoner of her own behavior. Who is the real captive here, Miss Angel or Becky? The theme of freedom and responsibility cuts through the story. The teenager has more freedom, but with that freedom comes more responsibility. In the broader conservation picture, we have to be responsible stewards of the earth. All creatures, wild or not, should be treated responsibly. It can't all be about profit.
Here is a short synopsis:
"Becky Russel's summer vacation isn't getting off to a great start. She's broken up with her boyfreind. she's not on speaking terms with her best friend, and she can't get her lifeguard job back because of an argument with the swim coach. Worst of all, she believes her parent's controlling ways have made her a prisoner in her own home. Why is everyone against her? All she wants is a little freedom. Shes' got to escape!
Becky flees to her uncle's dolphen research facility in the Flordia Keys. She becomes enthralled with a handsome conservation activist who opposes marine mammal captivity. In turn, Becky questions the morality of her uncle's business, nearly destroying it in the process.
One exceptionally compassionate that lives at the facility is Miss Angel, the lead dolphin for the facility's new dolphin-child therapy program. this program must succeed in order for Becky's uncle to survive economically.
While wrestling with the dolphin captivity issue, she seeks her own personal independence. Can Becky accept the responsibility that freedom requires of her?"
The author Jerry Smith has worked with and studied dolphins in French Polynesia and Flordia. He holds a Master of Education degree from Trenton State College. He lives in South Amboy, NJ with his wife and daughter, both of whom share his fascination with these magnificent marine mammals. Jerry also has put out a CD of his music.
