A week-end in Washington, DC...how delicious, I thought to myself, as I made my plans to visit my oldest son Will in our nation's capital. In my plans I thought to visit the new Native American Museum as well as revisit some of the older Smithsonian museums as well as my favorite, The National Geographic Building . Funny, how plans change.
Last Saturday was an absolutely gorgeous sunny day with temperatures in the low 70's... no humidity at all. Rather then spend the day inside (something we can do in the winter should I visit), we decided to gather up Vitamin D and walk the Mall visiting all the Memorials. After a hearty breakfast at an eatery on Massachusetts Ave (Will had an omelet, Mel had a Belgium waffle with fresh fruit and I had scrambled eggs with a bagel), we took the Metro to the Smithsonian station. Come join our walk as we stroll the mall.

"Listen, I want to get a shot lying on the grass looking up at the Memorial with just the granite, flag and skies", I said to Will as we crossed the street over to the Lincoln Memorial.

"Hey, what's even better, I can lie back on these granite seats and get the shot I want."

As I was laying there taking the shot, a young girl inquired whether the view was good. Awesome I said and with that her whole family laid back on the benches. Funny, I think I started a new trend.
Respects paid, it was now time to head out across the grass towards the WW II Memorial and the House of Lincoln.

World War II Memorial

Would that this statement was true today. Leaving here, we headed towards the Lincoln Memorial. As we mounted the stairs, I looked up and was in awe of the following image.

Then it was on to the FDR Memorial...a bit of a hike, I might say...but well worth it. (I'm going to do a seperate photo/essay on that Memorial).

Mel cooling off at one of the many waterfalls at the FDR Memorial. Must hydrate, you know.

After visiting FDR and Eleanor, we were hungry so we headed for the Willard Hotel.

Then we headed back to the Hilton for some rest and relaxation in the pool before heading out that evening for dinner at the many ethnic restaurants on Connecticut Avenue.

In very late Aug of 2001 we were in DC. I did not realize I had a pair of scizzors in my Videocamera bag. They looked through my bag prior to our going up the Monument. They removed the scizzors and kept them for me. As to the videocamera, they asked me to demonstrate how it works, to make sure it was not a bomb.
Less than 2 weeks later, it was 9/11, and that whole scene would be a thing of the past. I did get some wicked good shots from the top of the monument.
You are a real trend setter.

the Memorials are always heart touching,
the structures not only larger then life but beautiful...
Would love to see the FDR Memorial. Eleanor Roosevelt was quite a woman. Anything about her is always interesting to me.
Are people really in the water in that one photo? Guess I would think it wouldn't be allowed. However, now that I'm thinking, there are some fountains downtown and it isn't unusual to see the kids getting wet, and I do think that's allowed.
Post another one. Loving every minute of it.
Getting their own photo essay says to me you thought there was important stuff to show and I am tickled. Can't wait for it to post. I'm definitely partial to Eleanor. Although pretty enamored with Franklin also. To think about what he could move a nation to do when some of these very same projects can't be put into place now really gets me. I'll be watching for it.
Imagine me in a jail cell...I'm sure they would release me just because they wouldn't want to listen to me.
I of course went to the National Geographic channel to see this thinking it might be a version of a reality show from NG types. I must say one word of protest about your breakfast: The Belgian who sold you the waffle might be an illegal alien and that waffle could have been made in China.
nor waffles from China
The only person who waffles
Is a Bush who is a Whiner.
You bring back so many good memories of our trip to that wonderful place and a yearning to go back. It's been a while and it's time to re-visit and spend another 10 days or more... Capital photos of the capital city, Bob!
