I was one of the 10 lucky winners chosen by Gather to review Steve Winwood's new album - Nine Lives.
About the artist:
Stephen Lawrence Winwood was born & raised in Birmingham, England. He frst became interested in swing and Dixieland jazz, and began playing drums, guitar, and piano as a child, and first performed with his father and older brother Muff in the Ron Atkinson Band at the age of eight; in 1963 the brothers chose to pursue that music full-time, joining guitarist Spencer Davis to form the Spencer Davis Group. This is a list of the bands he has been nvolved with since; The Powerhouse, Ginger Baker's Air Force, The Third World, Blind Faith, Traffic, & Eric Clapton's Rainbow Concert Band.
CD Description:
The CD 'Nine Lives' develops all the numerous periods of Steve Winwood's exceptional career; which extends beyond his wholesome and natural delight of making music. These new songs reach from the arousing "Fly" to the fiery "Dirty City" (featuring a guest appearance by long-time friend Eric Clapton) to the intense and passionate "Hungry Man"; but you can still hear his folky/acoustic roots coming through. The CD begins in precise style, with "I'm Not Drowning," a very memorable acoustic blues number. My favorite track though is"Dirty City" which is a curse Blind Faith style number that is an opulent, ambitious single . Another charming cut of the collection is"Fly" were the flute at the end of the song is rather gripping and really invokes the image of flight.
