"I'll be home for Christmas" - Johnny Mathis - Merry Christmas-released 1960. It stirs sentiments regarding family and although it may not have the religious connotation that Christmas music should represent, I feel there is no closer thing to God than being close to Family.
I'll give an answer in two parts. My favorite popular Christmas song is Do You Hear What I Hear? sung by Bing Crosby. I have a story about that but I will write an article someday to tell it! I love the line saying "A Child, a Child, sleeping in the night..." My favorite Christmas carol is Oh Little Town of Bethelem, sung by a church congregation! I love the line about "above thy deep and dreamless streets..." Love talking about Christmas music!
I also liked for a classic twist a cover of "Christmas Song" by Hootie & The Blowfish. An excellent song, and aloso Dave Matthews' acoustic Christmas song with Tim Reynolds. Anything Sinatra.
