John Mayer has released his third album, "Continuum," and Mayer fans, old and new, will find plenty to like on this CD. It takes you from the funky "Vultures" to the quiet, thoughtful "Gravity" to the lighter more pop type tune, "The Heart of Life."
This latest CD has much more of a jazzy blues feel to it than his second CD, "Heavier Things," where he began to incorporate more jazz on songs such as "Clarity," my favorite John Mayer song.
You'll find Mayer's Claptonesque guitar playing on songs such as the cover of the Hendrix remake, "Bold as Love" and "In Repair" where listeners get a real taste of Mayer's great guitar playing towards the end of the song (these are two of my favorites on the CD).
His music has a more mature quality and the songs themselves tackle some heady subjects such as war and the world we live in, as in his first single "Waiting for the World to Change" and also "Belief."
My top 2 songs on this CD are "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room" about a failing relationship, and "Dreaming of a Broken Heart," where he perfectly captures the feelings after the relationship has ended. The fact that these two are my favorites should not surprise anyone who knows the emotional, romantic that I am :).
"Slow Dancing..." has a very bluesy, guitar feel while "Dreaming..."starts off with keyboards as the main instrument, brings in the guitars midway through, then ends again with the keyboards.
The CD ends with "I'm Going to Find Another You," where Mayer brings in the horns to provide the perfect ending for this soulful collection.
While Continuum is different from his previous works, this latest John Mayer collection has a lot to offer for those looking for more than an album full of top 40 hits.
