For Mother's Day two years back my daughter wrote me a poem. It was the only gift I received, but it was the greatest gift that I could've ever asked for. There had been a lot going on that year and the years past and she was a teen, so we weren't getting along as well as we used to and the transition was kind of difficult.
But when she gave me the poem, I couldn't stop smiling through my tears. Surely all you mothers out there have experienced a moment similar to this where your child puts so much thought rather than money into a gift that it really just speaks to your heart. That's the greatest kind of gift anyone could receive.
The poem that my daughter wrote me is below:
Dearest mother I cannot tell
Of all you've done, you've taught me well
When I was young, you helped me tie my shoe
You've been beside me with all I've been through
When I almost drowned when I was three
You were there right next to me
And when the car skipped the street
I know I'd be fine 'cause you were in the next seat
When puppies came and our family grew
You showed me what I had to do
And when time came for them to go
You reassured me that they'd find nice hoomes
When their mother grew old and gray
I knew she would soon pass away
But you told me of where she'd be
And how she'd always be with me
So, I made it through that difficult time
And watched as she crossed the line
And though we each cried our tears,
We knew we'd meet in a few more years
Vacation last year was really great
We hunt out all day and stayed up late
The boys we met were cute and fun
And I'm sorry the vacation's done
For we returned only to find
The pain that we had left behind
Carol was gone now, one less friend
And all you could see around the bend
Was pain ahead, those lonely years
And I was there to dry your tears
Your friend was gone and you didn't know
Why it was she had to go,
But I was there to help you see
She'll forever be with you and me
For, in our hearts her soul lives on
Until we meet when we are gone
Now I'm grown and starting life
I'll go to college and become a wife
But I know that I'll do just fine
For there's always something I keep in mind
You've taught me the greatest thing I could learn,
That whatever I need, whatever I yearn
I can get with a little hard work and a fight
And always to speak for what I know is right
Never give in and let them walk over you,
For we learn from all that we've been through
So when you look back at all the years,
All the happy times and the painful tears
Every fight we've had and have gotten through
Have shaped my life, all thanks to you
So when you think of all the things I've done,
Remember they're all because of one
Person that I hold dear to my heart
I love you Mom, and we'll never part.
