Like a buzz-saw is his purring,
When he lives, and loves the life,
When he fares on milk and more milk,
Waxes fat, nor fears the knife;
Then he grows, expands and blossoms,
Like a plum tree in full bloom,
Contented eyes half-closed and musing,
As they slowly sweep the room;
There upon the cover, lazy,
On my bed he sleepy lies,
Til his purring rolls like thunder,
Then grows soft; he shuts his eyes,
Then his singing dies, we all
Sigh in relief, on tiptoe creep,
For we know, rejoice in knowing
His voice is stopped
Bath's fast asleep.
