I have to say I'm disappointed that I'm not going to have the opportunity to take advantage of the Free National Parks weekends, but what a wonderful opportunity for families around the country to get out and see our amazing parks, monuments, and historic sites. It's true that there are plenty of National park sites that don't charge at all, but some can charge as much as $20 for a car or if it's by person it can cost $3-$5 per person. Not a huge amount, but for some people, maybe too much and perhaps the chance to visit free will be just the push they need to visit.
This summer, there are two weekends left to visit over 100 parks for free. This weekend, July 18 & 19 and also August 15 & 16. For a list of what parks you can visit, check out Fee Free Weekend Parks.
But don't stop there, go see the parks whenever you have th opportunity. I've seen almost 60 of them so far and I plan to visit them all. What an amazing way to learn about history, nature, culture, etc. And, don't forget to get a National Parks Passport... collecting the Passport stamps is great fun.
NOTE: For those of you around the Richmond Area, this weekend is also the celebration of Maggie Walker's birthday at the Maggie Walker National Historic Site. IN addition the the usual free entrance, there will be a celebration at the Bethel AME Church followed by cake and punch at the site of Maggie Walker's home. It's an interesting tour and Maggie Walker was a visionary who helped her African American community by creating a bank where the people could save their pennies and get loans to start business. Definitely worth a visit if you have not yet been there.
