It's also the most active volcano in the world! In addition to visiting this site, I recommend seeing Laaloa Beach Park, the Kona Historical Society Museum, and one of the local golf courses. Katie, please tell him that the island is NOT just one big volcano.....we were formed by 5 volcanoes! LOL - The Kohala Range is extint; Mauna Kea has been dormant for hundreds of thousands of years; Mauna Loa was las active in 1984; Hualalai is dormant but not as old as the others, so who knows?; Kilauea has been active and still adding land to the island with a constant spewing of lava since 1983!
As far as I'm concerned....it is the most fascinating place on the face of the earth....and I pinch myself daily to just think I LIVE here!
;-)
It was so good to hear from someone who lives there. What a beautiful place to live!
