As I traipsed around in my travels abroad three weeks ago, I took notes and pictures just like any responsible card-carrying tourist.
A lot of my pictures were taken with care, to fulfill promises made to my friends on Gather... to give them a glimpse of the places I visited. Some of these pictures are just plain accidents. Sorry. Keep in mind that I'm not a professional photographer! You'll be able to tell which ones fall into each category.
This first picture is for Liz, Raven Spirit, whose many pictures of the ruins she had visited in her travels gave joy and inspiration to so many Gatherites, including me. I was determined I would visit such sacred places, too.
The Mayan ceremonial altar below is part of the Altun Ha ruins that we saw in Belize.

This next picture is in response to a Gather image I carried in memory--- Madame D.'s breakfast in Hawaii. Hers was a perfect shot worthy of the first page in a calendar of food porn.
My picture, sans swan is not as perfect as hers, but it does carry the requisite tropical ingredients... fried bananas, coconut ice cream and the view from the restaurant. Mine was shot from an open air restaurant, also in Belize.

This huge, lovely tree is for our tree-hugging friend, Tonia. It is growing in the center of the main plaza of the Quiriqua ruins in Santo Tomas de Castilla, Guatemala where the ancient Mayan stone steles still stand.
I will try to post an article solely devoted to the ruins, later.

Signs encountered on my travels reminded me of a lot of our Gatherites.
I found this sign on a sidewalk in New York. We all know who came to my mind as I shot this picture. Duckieone had to be in on the shot... to authenticate the photo for Vicky, she said.

Buildings in New York are worth the crick in the neck one earns for looking up so much. Besides the Empire State Building, one other building was instantly recognizable to this tourist. Macy's!
Gather girls would have the best fun shopping at this New York store, giftcards in hand!

Did I mention shopping? Ina-Melda would love to know New York street vendors sell almost anything, including shoes loaded with bling!
This multi-faceted art work in the New York NBC building reminded me of Minnie's color-studded poetry and paintings. Brilliant just like she is!
To all the writers on Gather especially Dianne J, Sandy K, Flit, Sharon, Stephanie, Wilhelmine, Sy, Elizabeth, Elsie, who should all have the opportunity to personally enjoy the peace and inspiration of scenes like this as they write. Aruba, Lesser Antilles
To the poets on Gather like Dean, Ed, JohnW, John B, Tom, Jan, Faith, Andrea, who would all appreciate the romance behind the tradition of visitors leaving a piece of rock atop another, to mark the secret hopes and wishes they leave behind. Yes, I left one for you. Aruba, Lesser Antilles.
Peking is a grand, venerable, elegant and awe-inspiring ship; with unparalleled stories of grandeur and greatness in her past... just like our own Dame Ruth. This ship we visited is now a living museum docked in New York.
This is for Sonia, who has repeatedly enhanced our education by teaching us through her articles on Gather about the exotic tropical fruits of Hawaii... I hope she will be able to identify this softball-sized fruit growing on a tall tree in the midst of the open market near the port of Semana, Dominican Republic.
For Debbie who loves turtles. This lively one lives in a pond in the Dolphin Academy in Curacao, Netherlands. He said, "Hi!"
( As an aside... close to the same pond lives a Pelican, an ugly-spirited bird who must have thought I was a tasty snack. Mean brute!)
The above Pelican gave me a permanent tattoo while trying to grab a piece of me. You can see the scar left from the wound he inflicted. I now believe Ina has reason to fear birds... but not ducks, ok?
Back to our program...
For our friend from down under, Carolyn, here's something purplish. Couldn't find penguins for her, they must not like vacationing in the tropics!
This Mandevilla vine was growing on the port of Semana, Dominican Republic.

For John W. who left a comment about the photo of the Cadena de Amor that I found on St. Thomas Virgin Islands last October.
I went back to the same place and found the same Cadena de Amor on the same long hedges of bougainvilleas, now in bloom too, making quite a show of two different species intertwined and blooming together in one place. Just like John and the lovely Inmaculada, si?

The Amazing Kate, the digger of histories and ancestries will surely know the value and import of a wall like this. We visited this Wall of Names outside the Immigration Museum in Ellis Island.
Nippy and Madame D. can decide who is deserving of this photo. *giggling* I found the book on the shelf of a gift shop on Bourbon Street in New Orleans
For our talented musical friend, Dannielle, who would probably join in with her guitar had she heard this engaging band on a sidewalk in New Orleans.
This next photo is gratefully offered to John Beck, Amy, Gerry Weiss and several more whose water-themed articles last fall inspired Gatherland to meditate on and compare the power of our actions and thoughts to the movement of water. Photo taken in New Orleans.
A N D...
For all the writers of Gatherland, all those mentioned above, and especially my connections like Dianne J, Stephanie B, Aniko, Sandy K, Wilhelmine, Elizabeth, Flit, Rose, Peg and all the rest... I wish success beyond their dreams --- publication of books that would fill the shelves of bookstores like Borders in New York

...that will allow for lovely Sunsets, (Santo Tomas de Castilla, Guatemala)
...great adventures, (St. Thomas Virgin Islands)
...and relaxing times like I had. Eagle Beach, Aruba, Lesser Antilles.
Happy Trails, ya'll!

I guess, as I took the pictures and as I picked the ones to share, Gather friends were behind my motivations. There are a lot more pictures but they would have made this page unwieldy so, hopefully I can post other articles and images soon.
This was great, Duckie! What an adventure you went on! I did a 3 week vacation some years ago and all I could think about was home towards the end. You must have been exhausted!
I would SO have to have had a pair of those ruby slippers! I mean, WOW! And that bird? Didn't I warn you? Unprovoked attacks. Yup. They're evil. They would have had to put me in a rubber room after something like that.
===
Ina, I never paid attention to the ratings before. Ach! I guess someone didn't like my pictures? Oh well, maybe I'll post some he/she will like better next time.
I was exhausted, but it was all worth it. It helped that 2 weeks of it was aboard a great ship where I only had to unpack once. I would have gone nuts if I had to pack and unpack repeatedly in the different places. It was bad enough doing it in both New Orleans and New York, where we spent 3 days in each.
If I remembered your shoe size, I might have bought you a pair of dem shoes. LOL.
That was the first time I ever experienced a bird attack. The caregiver at the place said he had turned mean because kids have tormented him relentlessly before. Yeah, right.
I love that sailboat with the dark sails. Classy! And the food/seascape photo, good idea. I'll visit the ruins one day too!
Thanks for your pictures!
===
Ishbel, thanks! They are my inspiration, in more ways than one.
===
Flit, thank you!
And you were in New Orleans? darn, wish I'd known, I would have driven over for a big Hey y'all!
===
Nippy, if I was a frog, I'd say the trip was like finding a BIG pond with all the lilypads filled with girl frogs and all the bugs I could eat.
===
Ina, I just looked. Congratulations to US! WE are all featured... we are all in this, ya know!
===
Tabitha, do it! Don't wait until you're too old to enjoy stuff. There were extra things we would have loved to do on this trip but couldn't because of the limitations that aging bones give us. For instance, my husband wanted us to go zip-lining in the rainforests but that was out of the question for bad backs and arthritic hands. So, go while you're young!
===
Faith, you'll make it to Aruba, I have faith in you! :-)
We were in New Orleans for three wonderful days. I want to go back... there are more things I wanted to do and see! Maybe next time we could meet?
I went to New Orleans for a week a couple of years ago. I loved it. I'd go back at the drop of a hat.
You put this together so beautifully.
Well done.
===
Sharon, you prove yourself a wise woman over and over. :-)
===
Tonia, my pictures are nowhere near as good as the ones you take, but the impetus behind them is heartfelt. And, I am learning to take better shots!
===
Necee, thanks for stopping in.
The scar will remind me to be more careful around birds!
===
Vicky, I'm glad you caught that. If my purse was bigger I might have been tempted to steal the sign for you. Just think... a new adventure for you, Madame Vicky!
Exquisite other photos...
===
Jan, my beautiful poet-friend... you are so sweet! Thanks for the welcome and for finding this. I'll have to go check on your more recent works, I am still finding it hard to find everybody!
===
Kathryn, you are too kind! I didn't realize you worked for Macy's!
===
Jessie, I am honored... thanks so much!
Congrats on being feature top billing on the Gather Home Page
I like it very much! Keep posting the same quality content! Bye for now!
===
Aniko, you were up late! I went to bed earlier, it appears.
===
Dee, thanks for stopping your train here!
===
Pappu, it's a joy to share photos here. When new people stop to look, it's more special.
I love your icon! Is it a Selenicereus.. a Vanilla Cactus blossom? It's truly a spectacular "Queen of the Night"!!!
Thanks, Ed!
So I'm back--what an amazing trip it must have been! I could hardly follow all the different places you went to, but you took gorgeous pictures everywhere.
I myself still have trouble keeping all the islands straight! Lets see... from New Orleans we went to Santo Tomas de Castilla in Guatemala, Belize, Aruba Lesser Antilles, Curacao Netherlands, St. Thomas Virgin Islands, Semana Dominican Republic, and then New York. We took 3 weeks, not long enough to see everything but too long to be away from home!
===
Kirk, thanks! Long time no see! How are you doing?
Each image is a story in itself...I love how you've captured the feel and the atmosphere and have shown us what a pelican will do to a person who either tried to feed him or didn't!
Thanks very much, Duckie, this was a trip in itself! Welcome back. Salud.
New goal, huh? To take a picture like that, or to go to Belize to get some fried bananas topped with coconut icecream? Either one would be remarkable! :-)
===
Mariana, thank you...you are always too kind. Your gracious response to my question regarding New Orleans before we left was a great help towards our enjoyment of that great place. It is every bit as amazing as you described. Again, thanks for your kindness!
It's great to be back!
===
Janie, thank you!
I'm sorry that I missed this somehow (@#%* feeds!). What an exceptional photo essay! I felt like I was right there enjoying it with you. I love visiting ruins like those at Altun Ha, and have been fortunate enough to get access to a few of the more protected sites.
It looks like you had a wonderful time, and I hope that your trip was everything you had wanted it to be.
Of all the things we saw on this trip, I think the ruins made the biggest impression on me. It whetted my appetite to see more and learn more about this vanished civilization.
It was great... it was fun!
I think I know why you're not getting notification of my articles on your feeds. We are NOT connected. We used to be. After the update, the one before the newer Hawthorne, we were disconnected. I thought you either dropped me or Gather did, I was too intimidated to say anything.
Sorry I come so late, but I´ve been away in England, and otherwise busy!
I heard you were on a trip and that your wife has been awfully sick. I hope she is better?
I'm glad you got to see some of Belize. It is a beautiful country but already changed from when I was there just 5 years ago. I wouldn't hesitate to visit the coast again, either.
Everywhere you visited seemed to have a charm of it's own.
I did think of you a lot while we were visiting the Mayan ruins in Belize and in Guatemala. I finally understood your fascination for sacred places like them.
===
Bobbi, I read your account of your time in Belize... great story and awesome pictures! Thanks for coming here.
===
Jennifer, thanks!
I so enjoyed it. I wish I could hang with Duckie sometime. That's where the fun is ; )
Great photos. That pelican was mean.
I'm tempted to put a GPS tracker on Duckieone... maybe we could all hang out together?
happy triple points...
( and just so you feel better...I picked green beans in the rain today...2 pounds!
I love the first photo. Just love it. And it looks good enough for a calendar to me.
The tree is awesome. It is so majestic it's almost spiritual.
I think I need to own those red high-tops. I like red shoes. I like high-tops. I especially like red high-tops. But I did not know that sequins were an option, ever.
Save me some beans, please? I did not plant any this year. Sigh. I'll have to go the Farmers Market route for my fresh-picked beans.
I promised a photo essay of the ruins but I have been too lazy and too busy other times. I'll have to buckle down and do it soon before I lose the memories.
It IS a very impressive tree. I could swear spirits lived in it.
I could see you in those red high tops, believe me!
Great essay Duckie.
10 Stars!
That sunset shot is beautiful!
what beautifully taken pictures! Thanks for sharing them with us!
