Shortly after making the big move to Sweden, we decided to take a bit of a romantic holiday to Germany. We drove down through Denmark to the Skandline Ferry which deposited us on the German coast at Puttgarden, where we then drove down to Luebeck and took a room at the Movenpick Hotel right there in City Center, where all the best shopping and dining is located.
You pull up into a half-circle driveway right there on the canal and enter into the huge and luxuriant lobby which boasts 4 small desks for checking in. The staff all speaks very good English and are happy to show you pictures of the various rooms so you can make a decision. Lars selected a Superior room for 125eu per night. It was worth every penny.
We parked the car (7eu per day)and took the beautiful elevator to the first floor of rooms. One whole wall was window, but the view from our room wasn't exactly all that, it was of a small courtyard blanketed with snow... quite pretty, mind you, but not the view it could have been from a higher floor on the other side of the building.
The room itself is just flat huge with two singles put together to form a king size bed. The mattresses were extremely comfortable, and I cannot begin to tell you how absolutely cuddly those duvets were. Each room in the Mövenpick is tastefully done in a different color scheme. Ours was subtle greens.
Free Internet access is included in the room price and the connection is at a good sized is desk connected to the mini-bar. We did not bring either of our laptops though so I cannot tell you how well the connection works. Hey, this was a romantic trip, remember? No distractions allowed... So sayeth the man. heh.
The mini-bar was slightly high as you expect it to be, with the beer running at 3eu each. There were various snacks like the local Marzipan and chips, wines, beer, etc. Coffee was free in the form of instant packets with a machine for heating water.
The bathroom was very large with big, soft towels. The tub seemed a bit odd though being pretty dang high off the floor. He had no problem stepping in at 6'6, but at 5'2 I had to brace myself on him to get into it. He, however, had problems then with the lowness of the ceiling once inside. The shower is one of those messaging types, which kept him endlessly amused. (*cough*) There was plenty of hot water with a really nice strong flow.
As far as shampoos and what have you, this is supplied in the form of an all-purpose solution in containers attached to the walls which you squeeze. Umm yeah. Hopefully you know what I mean. I used my own shampoo and conditioner, but did use this stuff for body wash and was delighted to find it did not dry my skin out as so many hotel soaps tend to do. There was a cute little sewing kit by the in-room safe in the closet.
Breakfast is listed as being 15eu for the lavish buffet, but we found that it was actually included in this room price. The restaurant was just beautiful and overlooked the snowy bank of the canal. The buffet was just fantastic in both selection and quality of the food. Just about any kind of European food you should desire can be found here. The night menu indicated a penchant for Duck in various forms such as Al'orange (oh hell I aint looking up the spelling.)
Location-wise it just could not be better. Within one block is a Apoteke (Pharmacy) and a short block further brings you to some of the best shopping in the world. The buildings here are just breathtaking beautiful with an old World feel. Restaurants galore are in every nook and cranny of the narrow streets, there is even a damn McDonalds. Oyoyoyooy...
Check out was a breeze and they even supplied me with stamps to mail a few postcards, then sent them off for me.
I give a full 5 stars to this location of the Swiss Movenpick Chain and would not hesitate to stay here again. Go ahead, pamper yourself.
