As rich in history as it is in beauty, Red Top Mountain allows for a temporary escape from the stress-filled, high-paced world in which we live. Originally christened for the deep red color of its soil, Red has also come to describe dedicated hikers' flushed faces after reaching the Top of the Mountain.
Over fifteen miles of scenic trails provide people of all levels of physical fitness with the opportunity to either leisurely or rigorously exercise, explore, and become immersed in the harmonic serenity of nature. In order to preserve the rare splendor of this natural sanctuary, visitors are required to purchase an inexpensive but ultimately beneficial daily or annual parkpass (excluding Wednesdays).
For those who rightfully value restroom availability over potentially rash-provoking bushes, there are numerous locations in the park (including the trails) that offer such accommodations. One of those locations includes the thirty-three room Lodge/ Conference Center whose reasonable rates, complimentary restaurant, and quaint gift shop make it the perfect weekend getaway. Fully furnished cottages with lakeside views and group shelters for between 100-250 people are also available.
Lodging amenities for all three options are quite extensive and provide a cozy, cabin-like atmosphere that makes even the toughest critic a nature fan. For those who dare to go outside their comfort zone and desire the complete outdoor experience, camping costs a mere $1 per person for those over age 25; this price excludes the convenience of luxury RV's, which cost approximately $20 for parking.
Lake Allatoona surrounds the majority of this 1,4000-acre peninsula and provides adamant hydrophiles with endless water-related activities that include boating (the Park Marina does have boat rentals), water skiing, swimming, and beaching. For those who are cautiously enthusiastic about such activities, the park has a truly extensive special events calendar that includes canoeing and camping instruction, junior camps, historical excursions for all those history buffs, Halloween festivals including the famous hayrides, Easter egg hunts, bluegrass concerts, and much more. For more information on these and other events, call 800-864-7275.
With its close proximity to Atlanta, easy accessibility to I-75, and a solid reputation for awing all of its visitors, Red Top mountain definitely tops the rest.

When we lived in the LA area we had a cabin up in Big Bear Lake that we could get to on weekends as it was only 106 miles from home. Walking in the mountains with the dogs and kid was very relaxing. Or to just sit out front and watch the world go by.
But now that we're in St. Cloud Minnesota and where I'm at is like home in a park as the lot is large and has 50 or more trees on it with a four foot high chain link fence around the back so we don't need to be concerned about the dogs, I need no other place to go too.
However, my kid wants to get a cabin out in the woods up north away from as many people as possible. He now also wants a place to get away from it all and relax.
It is nice to get away, especially to a place so scenic and tranquil. I would love to visit Big Bear Lake.
We have a lot of great places to hike just north of Atlanta and it's nice that you can drive to a beach in under six hours.
Good luck on the cabin Richard!
I'll definitely want to see the Lake Allatoona area next time I'm out that way.
Well done, Libby.
and now enjoy the 4 seasons, changing of color, and majestic scenery
all around us.
Have a great day!
