Ahh, Auvers, I still dream of it
This charming village, about one and a half hours by train from Paris, is most noted for having been the town where Vincent Van Gogh spent the last 3 months of his life....He painted up a storm, then for some unknown reason, went out to the wheat fields which he painted more then once and shot himself in the stomach…His gravesite is nearby, a most touching monument as he lies next to his brother Theo, both graves intertwined by the ivy that grows there, a tribute to a brothers love, in death as in life.
But it's not all about death, the life he led is illustrated as you walk in his footsteps, and pass some of the famous subjects in his paintings, The Church Of Auvers, Daubignys's Garden and The Village Street, all immortalized forever by this incredible talent. You can visit the Ravoux Inn where he lived and see his room, kept the way it was during his stay....They have a film presentation there as well....
Another fascinating spot to visit is the Chateau of Auvers, "A Journey into the Impressionist Era". What a wonderful experience. Housed in a beautiful chateau, this is a multimedia event, simulating the Montmartre dance halls and the Can Can, ...Then, board a virtual train to view the Ile de France, as so many artists of the time did, view Monet's retreat on Argenteuil and Pissaros favorite town, where he lived and painted so many pictures, Pontoise. If you have one-day trip to take I would recommend this one over all the others.
