The John Muir National Historic Site in Martinez, California is a park devoted to preserving the Victorian home that John Muir lived in with his wife and children. The home has been recreated with furniture and artifacts from that period to look like it did when the Muir family lived there. The one piece that actually belonged to John Muir was a simple desk that was in his personal study or what he referred to as his Scribble Room.
The grounds are covered with fruit trees and not far from the main home is the Martinez Adobe which was used by John Muir's father in law as a place for storage and as a home for the foreman of the orchards to live in. Later, Muir's daughter and family lived in the adobe for a while.
The grounds are really lovely to visit. We happened to stop there on a rainy day, of course, so it was wet and gray, but the visitor center included a really nice audiovisual program highlighting John Muir's life and work. Muir was instrumental in the creation of Yosemite National Park as well as many others.
It doesn't take long to visit John Muir National Historic Site, but it is definitely worth a visit if you're going to be in the vicinity of Martinez, California. Hopefully, you're visit will take place on a sunny day!
