Modern gift wrap came into being in the United States by accident, by Hallmark. In 1917, the Hall Brothers (founders of Hallmark) had run out of red and green tissue paper, which was used to wrap presents. They had sheets of decorative envelope liners in their store and started to sell those as gift wrap instead for 10 cents each. The paper was a huge hit and sold out quickly. So, the next year they sold three sheets for 25 cents. Eventually they began printing their own wrapping paper and it was as popular as their greeting cards.
