I just received an e-mail from gather about their Starbucks contest for a trip to Costa Rica. They want me to write an essay about how I would positively affect environmental change in my community. Has anyone at gather ever been to China? I pretty much live in the developing part of the developing city in the developing country. That means most of this district is dirty. The rivers give off an awful stench. The populous uses the bushes and trees as toilets rather than the public toilets. Most garbage is thrown into the streets rather than the garbage cans that are all over the city. And I could go on about this. It's very simple to affect change around--pick up some garbage.
But I also have a problem with the contest prize. Giving away a trip to Costa Rica is not environmentally friendly. Sure, it'll be good for the tourism industry or the country, but it is still damaging to the environment.
Really, how is this contest actually affecting environmental change for the better?

Joanne, don't feel too bad. I delete most emails without reading them. I was just a little bored when I opened this one.
Gary, maybe we should clean up Jakarta and Shenzhen by picking up some garbage. Too bad gather won't give us a prize for doing that.
I think he's on to somehting!
