Interested in increasing turnout at this year's election? Throw a party! Invite your friends, family, neighbors, and colleagues to an informal party on November 4th or 5th -- the weekend before the election. It's the ideal time to make sure that people know where and why to vote. (Be sure to have a list of precinct locations.)
If you're supporting a specific candidate, cause, or initiative, a house party gives you the ideal setting to reach voters in the critical days right before the election. Plan multiple parties in your area and connect them all with a conference call featuring your candidate or spokesperson. Instead of trying to make your case in a 30-second ad, you'll have a 20-25 minute conference call to get your message across. Encourage your supporters to invite undecided and wavering voters -- a good way to do this is by inviting neighbors from your street or building, not just fellow supporters.
Organizing a house party event does not have to be expensive or complicated. If your group does not have a party program, set up a free event site at http://www.party2win.com. (Or search to see which groups are organizing parties in your area.) No matter what software you use, the key is to invite as many people as possible by email, by phone, and /or with flyers. And, remember: make it fun! Everyone loves a party. Plan a potluck or a dessert tasting. Ask guests to bring their favorite dish.
