My 5 year old son has Autism~PDD~NOS.

What's up/new? We can always learn more, right?

My step son is autistic. He is 24 and back then, they labeled him mentally retarded. Because the autism was not properly addressed, he is now socially and mentally retarded. I met him when he was 12 and could see that he was bright, but not communicative and pointed this out to my (now husband) boyfriend. We started pushing for answers and it was finally admitted to us that there was possibly a misdiagnosis, but doctors could not be sure (they're not going to bad talk one another anyway) and to just do the best with what we had. It's a shame because I believe he could have been so much more independent than he is now or ever will be.
They are much better now at making the diagnosis for autism than they were years ago.

I work with kids that have Autism. Plus I am taking a class. I hope no one minds if I ask questions... :)

There was no diagnosis when I was a boy in the 1950's. You were called stupid or retarded or worse. I was one of those children. I came to realize in later life that my symptoms were that of an autistic. I wrote my story in a novel entitled "The Closer's Song". The novel depicts how I overcame substantial existential odds to deal with my infirmity.

I have a ten year old son with autism and a twelve year old daughter with bipolar. This summer my son stole the keys to my truck and crashed it into the neighbor's house because he believed he was living out a scene from his favorite movie. I have recently signed up to gather and am really trying to make new friends.:)
