I adopted your dog today
The one you left at the pound
The one you had for seven years
and no longer wanted around.
I adopted your dog today
Do you know he's lost weight?
Do you know he's scared and depressed
and has lost all faith?
I adopted your dog today.
he had fleas and a cold,
but don't worry none.
You've unburdened your load.
I adopted your dog today.
Were you having a baby or moving away?
Did you suddenly develop allergies or was
there no reason he couldn't stay?
I adopted your dog today.
he doesn't play or eat much
He's very depressed, but
he will learn again to trust.
I adopted your dog today.
And here he will stay.
He's found his forever home
and a warm bed on which to lay.
I adopted your dog today.
And I will give him all that he could need.
Patience, love, security, and understanding.
Hopefully he will forget your selfish deed.

And let's send it in as an editorial comment to our local news.
And people so the same thing to their children!
I'm not a big dog person and most of the people I know, including family, have purchased bred dogs, but I wouldn't get an animal any other way than through a shelter. So many sweet animals, so many beautiful pets in need of love.
I've been on both ends of this deal. We have adopted 2 dogs from the pound. The first was wonderful, we had her 13 years until she died. The second was a pup that just didn't seem right from the beginning. He was always sort of mean. After we had him about 2 years, he attacked one of my children's friends and bit him for no reason at all. I watched it happen. We had no choice but to return him to the pound where we got him, although we knew what the outcome would be. It broke my heart. Our next dog (she is 11) was purebred because we were afraid to put ourselves through the risk of the unknown again.
Though, I do have to say, sometimes things happen. Like our family cat, Dax.
We got Dax as a kitten. She was well loved and very spoiled. She was a "momma's girl". My 2nd oldest son was only a baby when we got Dax.
Dax for some reason decided she really didn't care for the male species. At first it was ok, she left the boys/men alone and cuddle tons with my daughter and myself.
Then after the birth of my 3rd son, she started acting a little more strangely toward males. She avoided them, ran from them, and would get grumpy.
Well, I found out I was pregnant for my 4th son and we decided it was time to find our Dax a new home. It broke my heart, but she had started attacking the feet and legs of any male that walked through our home. She didn't do any serious biting/clawing but she made it clear that if she got upset enough, she could. My poor sons and husband weren't able to move without being pounced.
And then the deciding moment... she was on the back of the couch near my husband's arm. My husband shifted his arm, which lightly brushed against Dax. It wasn't even a bump. She attacked my husband's arm and this time she drew blood.
I really didn't want my baby leaving, but my human babies were more important. I was fearful that my newest son would be hurt badly by her when he began crawling and my other boys were becoming terrorized by Dax.
I didn't take her to the shelter, but it came close to it. I spent almost 3 months trying to find her a nice home. Finally, when I was about to break down and take her to the shelter, a friend decided needed a new friend would be a good idea and she had a home.
Sometimes, things happen :(
Blessings
Thanks for this article Carol. People need to know that their furry family members miss them and may not always get rescued. This was wonderful.
