[I am signing off Gather for good. I must. It's been an amazingly rewarding experience for me reading your writing and the critiques of my writing. I've come to see many of you as good friends in writing. So as my parting gift, I offer the following as a small and insignificant holiday present. I hope your holidays are joyful.]
Let me give you winter, the best I have,
when life’s beauty isn’t taken for granted,
when the world strips to its naked form
and emerges so pristine and unadorned
that you can see to the soul of it all.
Let me give you snow, thick and heavy,
and a steep hill you must zigzag to the top
just so you can do it again, with a bump
half way down for launching skyward
and after landing you’re dusted with stars.
Let me give you a music box of polished wood
with thumb-worn brass key for winding
so when standing in front of the fireplace
and lifting the lid you twirl through the room
to the Dance of the Sugarplum Faeries.
Let me give you wool blankets, maybe two,
down vests with quills escaping, lined gloves,
quilted long johns, galoshes with buckles
and a goofy Elmer Fudd hat with earflaps
you wouldn’t be caught dead in otherwise.
Let me give you children who refuse to come in
and be warmed with cocoa and marshmallows
because they’re immersed in the act of creation
making the snowman perfect since who’s to say
the primordial element won’t melt in a moment.
Let me give you a bit of heaven on earth.

Lost Soul, I too wish we had met up before. Thank you for your insightful comments on my meager poetry attempts. And I wish you all the best for the future.
Amy, my dear, there are some people on Gather I'd like to meet in person, their online personae is so compelling and pure. You are right at the top of that list. Please do remember my initial comments to you about writing like yourself. You have such a beautiful voice it would be a shame to hide it behind someone else's. God bless you Amy. I wish you all the happiness.
Be well, and best of luck in all your projects, including the publication of the book's success.
Un saludo desde Andalucia,
John
Carol, thank you also. Being a comforting old friend is a compliment I relish. I couldn't ask for much more. Be well and happy holidays.
Ah Ed, the poet laureate of Gather. Thank you for your kind words. I know you're working on a collection of your poetry and I hope to see it published sometime soon. I have to say that your prolific production of such high quality kept me writing. There was no hope keeping up with Nudelman, but if you produced the quality work you did while being a world class scientist, I might be able to produce a lesser amount no matter what my situation. Your persistence was an inspiration, not to mention the beauty of your writing. Best wishes to you Ed. Please keep writing.
Mark, thank you for the kind words. You can count on continued writing. It's in my blood. I hope you do as well. Best wishes to you in all you do.
Do look out your kitchen window, though. I left you a snow angel with footprints trudging off forlornly to that ever-shifting horizon of yours.
and Stephen I wish you
the warmth of spring rain
ideas emergent
sweet rain
to nurture
the brilliance
inherent
Damn, EB. Not again. That always happens to me. Just don't expect me to come bail you out.
Sorry Casey. Perhaps when things are less hectic I will be back. And if that happens, I'll look you up.
Belated good wishes for your future writing. You are one of our best.
