Many people say that we are in or are on the brink of a recession and lots of people are looking for ways to cut costs and save money. I am one of those people. But I find that there are just some things that I have to have "with a label".
So I'm curious...name some things that you would never buy "generic". What labels or brands do you swear by?
For me:
Food: Fruit Loops, Ocsar Meyer hot dogs, Coffee-mate creamer, Aunt Jemima pancake mix,Gerber baby food
Clothes: labels aren't important to me
Others: Pantene shampoo and conditioner, Benadryl, Pampers, Nursery brand nursery water

1) I will buy store brand groceries (O Organics, Lucerne and Select from Safeway; Market Pantry and Archer Farms from Target; Private Selection from King Soopers, are examples) that I've tried for most foods (some are better than others). I'm leery of the "white box" varieties, but most of them are in foods I don't buy anyway.
2) I stick with name-brand milk. It seems to do a better job of staying fresh through its date.
3) I stick with farmers markets where I know something about the farming method (fertilizer, etc). As a veg, I do a lot of these, though.
4) I'm tall, so I have to try on clothes anyway. If I'm going to buy something with an off-label, I pay more attention to the fiber content and feel.
5) Birkenstock sandals. Better for my feet, knees, and back. Sven clogs, when I want to dress up.
I find that you have to use more of the generic brand to get the work done so you're better off getting the cheapest name brand available.
No X-Brand foods, though, you gotta eat the stuff...it has to be up to snuff.
Also, Gasoline...name brand Texaco, Shell, Mobile, etc. Those stations selling "Gasoline"...sell gas that seems to evaporate quicker or something...you're barely out of the station and the needle starts to drop.
Name brand:
1. Ziplock freezer bags---cheap brands are too thin
2. Renyold's Wrap--see above
3. Pull-ups
4. HIdden Valley Ranch Dressing---off brand doesn't bother me but the hubs can tell
5. Cheerios
Doesn't matter:
1. Plastic wrap--every brand gives me crap
2. mayonaise/miraclewhip
3. butter--Aldi brand is what I buy
4. Cheese---Again, Aldi is good
5. Oatmeal
I buy brand name Goldfish crackers but only because they have the flavors I like. The generic brands only have cheddar flavor and I don't like it. I buy the parmesian flavored goldfish.
Some store brands are acceptable and others are not. If I can get the name brand on sale and with a coupon, I'd rather have most of the name brand items.
I usually buy generic these days for (and this list is growing and my name-brands are shrinking as I just can't afford them): cereals (unless the name-brand is on sale, like the 2-for-$5 deals), I would buy a generic computer (e.g., white-box) but not a generic monitor or printer, other electronics (a cheap phone), other home products (towels, paper products, etc.), other foods.
It really all depends.
