I went to work first - and clocked in. I met with the other teacher who was going. The students met us upstairs - we're hoping that others hadn't been turned away by school security.
Only four kids went - it makes it easier to count heads and keep track on the trip, that's for certain. I gave them a little talk about the UN as we sat on the school steps waiting to see if other students were coming.
We took the subway to Times Square, then the bus to the UN.
We looked around the entrance for a bit before paying - all the kids and the other teacher got in at student rate. We went on the regular tour since there were so few in our group.
It was comprehensive. There is MUCH more artwork in the building than the last time I went. And there is much more information in the hallways about the efforts the UN is making in peacekeeping, etc. The exhibit on Hiroshima brought tears to my eyes - there were examples of the metal and glass that had melted due to the heat of the blast.
We took a long time in the bookstore - both the other teacher and I bought souvenirs for the students. We went to the benches that overlook the East River for the students to write something in journals we supplied them.
We then walked to Blimpies, got lunch, got back on the bus. Some kids took one train with one teacher, I took the other student on a different subway line to leave him closer to his home - it was VERY hot and he didn't want to walk any further than he had to.
That was trip #1. Hopefully we'll have more kids the next time.
