On Wednesdays, I will be featuring the strongest of the content that comes into the group. The group's stated genres are the following: fiction, poetry, memoir, creative non-fiction, playwriting or screenplays, or essays about writing or the publishing industry,
I am finding a fair number of people who send off-topic articles to this group. I realize this does happen with moderated groups, and I just want everyone to be certain they understand this group's direction.

As well, I have a few theme days planned for Wednesdays. Last week was Memoir.
Today is open, meaning that content in any of the above genres may be featured.
Next week, July 4, is a theme Wednesday. Please publish articles in the above genres with a Holiday theme - this can be July 4 - it can be any holiday - whether or not a US or North American holiday, European, Asian, African, Down Under or Kiwi holiday. Antarctica, I did not leave you out. You can publish an article about Antarctic holidays, if there are any.
A few people have asked me to provide the Wednesday schedule every week: Here it is.
* * *
Schedule of Wednesday's Themes in Writing Essentials
Wednesday, July 4: Holidays: Fiction, Memoir, Playwriting, Creative Non-Fiction, Poetry, Essays about Writing or the Publishing Industry - anything with a holiday theme will be Featured - not necessarily on the holiday of July 4th, but that would be great.
Wednesday, July 18: Fiction
Wednesday, August 1: Creative Non Fiction, Playwriting OR Memoir
Wednesday, August 15: Poetry
(A schedule for after August 15 will be published later)
On other Wednesdays, I will feature articles about Fiction, Poetry, Memoir, Creative Non-Fiction, Playwriting or Screenplays, Essays about Writing or about the Publishing Industry.
You can send articles to Writing Essentials about ANY of the above categories on ANY Wednesday; that being said, on THEME Wednesdays, only content in the specifc THEME will be Featured.
I will be moderating and featuring content at various intervals throughout the day.
There may be a lag between the time you publish and the time your article appears in the group.
On Wednesdays, I will feature between two and six articles.

Thanks, Sheila.
Thank you again! Great article!
I agree that it is not very practical to try to remember all of the details about the days; I wouldn't worry about it very much. Birdie has some specific themes, I have a few theme days, but I will accept EVERYTHING into the group as long as it falls within the categories of
fiction, poetry, playwriting, creative non-fiction, memoir, essays about writing or publishing industry since these are the categories that group owner Jennifer Hodge of Gather Editorial used to create this group.
As far as being featured, Features are open except for a few THEME days.
Does that help, Faith? and anyone else?
I like this group. I hadn't realized I wasn't part of it yet. hehe.
First time posting to any of the "Essentials" so I'mnot sure I did it correctly.
I posted a short story at:
http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474977041361
with the tags "writing" and "fiction" and posted it to "Writing" group among others.
Is that all I have to do to bring it to your attention or is there a "Writing Essentials" group spot?
Thanks.
I just looked into the group queue for articles waiting to be accepted and there are no articles waiting. I think you need to join the group (or, if you've joined), make sure you click WRITING (moderated) in your list of groups you publish to.
I hope to catch up reading your articles soon (again.)
Life's been a bit here and there.
I know from moderating other groups that articles that sometimes SHOULD belong are sometimes missed because they do not SEEM like they belong at first glance; by that, I mean, the tags do not indicate that they are about topics within the group's scope.
That is something for everyone to think about.
Also keep in mind, that every one of us editors has a lot of other things to do during the day and we do not necessarily have tons of time in which to carefully read each and every article (BEFORE we accept them into the group) - because I can tell you there are at least 20 or so articles waiting in the queue at any one time...
So, what I am saying is this: If your article is an essay about writing - make sure you indicate that in the title and the tags.
Same with any of the content genres indicated in the article above.
If your article is Fiction, say so! If it is Poetry, ditto!
If your article is Memoir - be sure to spell that out in the title and tags.
If your article is Creative Non-Fiction - be sure to indicate that in the tags and title, as well.
If your article discusses books, literature, reading habits, literacy, the publishing industry, the online writing world, or any of a number of topics that deal with writing or publishing -,MAKE SURE IT IS OBVIOUS TO THE DAILY EDITORS - and, please make sure it is obvious to people WHO MIGHT WANT TO READ YOUR ARTICLE, as well.
Check this article: Meet the Writing Editors by Pam Johnston, linked above in blue.
Jennifer Hodges has been moderating Monday and Tuesday, so far.
Chris Carlyle will be moderating Mondays from now on.
I'm gonna give it my best attempt, if I can drag anything out of the dry hole that is my erstwhile font of inspiration.
John, you're welcome.
Next week, being the 4th of July, the FEATURED articles will all be about some holiday. Could be 4th of July, or could be your own country or country of origin (the old country) national holiday. Or any other holiday.
of course, you can always publish CONTENT within the stated content genres on the 4th of July, too. It's just that only HOLIDAY articles will be FEATURES on the 4th of July.
I enjoy from a far what comes from those you help to bring forth as the flowers from their ground! To form such beauty so often takes one to help and that has been you all along.
I did talk with the editor du jour and the answer was vague enough to leave me with the feeling that I don't get it. My conclusion was that the Writing channel is not worth the time it takes to figure out who wants what. One moderator is difficult enough; seven, each with their own standards, is just painful...and ultimately useless.
