Special Education - What is it and how does it work? Great Resources Here!

I want to educate parents, teachers and students about Special Education services & resources.

I have my Master's degree in Special Education. I am a cross categorical special education teacher for 7th & 8th grade students. I specifically teach Language Arts, Reading, & Social Studies. I believe Reading and teaching it to students is the most important academic area!

Cross Categorical means I have students in my classroom with various disabilities such as; cognitive, emotional, learning, & physical.

The Resources here can be extremely helpful. Please add any resources you have used and found helpful to the lists at the link below.

I would love to find links or articles that explains what can be included and not included in IEP plans. I would also like to know what kind of tests or things parenst can ask for and how long we have to wait to get them done.

Many new rules just passed under I.D.E.A. Keep watching my lens for details. You should be able to find this information doing a search using IDEA and new IEP rules. You can always contact your local school districts special ed. department and ask them for details. Often many districts have websites with specific links to special ed. news.

I have asked my local school for this information. But they are hush hush and really haven't said anything..I always get "I don't know."

Many people don't understand this. And, in my experience, the reluctance of many parents to have their children "labeled", deprives the child of certain services that could level the playing field and help him succeed!

Do you have a local advocacy organization in your area? Often they can get the information to you quicker.

I too work in the special education but as a paraprofessional. Fern, parents need to look past the "Labels" and get help for their kid(s). It's only going to help them in the long run.

My eldest daughter (in 8th grade) has a GIEP and I don't worry much about her...

My youngest daughter has an IEP and had struggled with reading but now struggles with writting more than reading. Her IEP is still a work in progress really...but the school is cooperative and she has great teachers.

I believe her issue is dyslexia/dysgraphi...do you have any kind of resources that could help with that? I am especially interested in how to get the best IEP for her...and if it is better to get her diagnosed or just leave her labeled "learning disabled"

This is great info for anyone struggling to get answers for themselves or a friend with a child with special needs. I have a child with special needs and it is a daily battle to make sure she is getting the best education posssible and she is in a wonderful school. Thanks again for the post

It is all about the parents I work with kids and Adults with Special needs most have Autism. And from a outside looking in I can tell you it is the Kids/Adults that have good caring parents that get the best education and care. If a teacher sees that mom and dad care if the kid can read then the kid will read. If mom and dad check in on the classroom and teacher then those parents kids are clean and get better are. Sad but true Parents it is all up to you what you make out of your child's education and health. Someone ( a teacher, Dr., friend or family member, care giver, or who ever ) says your child can't show them yes my child can and make then help you reach you child's goal. I have 100 stories or kids who should not be able to and now they can.

thanks for the link! my son has an iep and has had problems since pre k. he is now in the 5th grade in a private school for kids with ld's. most likely processing disorder and possibly dyscalculia both of which i think is genetic (i have always had issues) his iq is high he kind of just "thinks outside the box" so to speak. always intersting to get more info any way i can...
