when I was a cashier, I worked with a bagger who was autistic. He did the job very well once he worked with a coach for about a week. He got into a routine and handled it every day. That was about 12 years ago and he still works there.

There are lots of people who are autistic that work and are good at what they do, sometimes it just may take them a bit longer.. I know a few autistic people that have very good jobs and are dam good at it.. Not all people however are not as lucky and wont be able to have a job and so that's why it is so important for them to get help at the first sign.. Thanks for stopping by Sheila.

Thanks for sharing, Tanya. I have worked as a substitute teacher and I have had the opportunity to work in a classroom where all of the children were autistic in someway. It was such an eye opening and blessed experience.

Good information. I have been doing some reading about autism since some of my kids' friends are Asperger's or autistic. The last book I read was "Born on a Blue Day" by Daniel Tammett. Along with the difficult parts, there are often "gifts," as you know.

Great article and reminder, Tanya. Thanks for posting it. Our son is 43 years old and we have actively fought our way through every possible complication (I think!) and attempt at a cure. It has been a battle and a blessing in our lives.

I have a daughter with Down Syndrome so special needs children and adults have been very special to me. I am a substitute teacher for all twelve grades, but my most enjoyable days are the days in a special needs classroom. They are eager to learn, you just have to figure out how they learn. Their needs are the same as every regular student when you figure out how to communicate with them. They are also very keen on knowing whether you really like them or not. When they realize you like them for who they are you will have a great relationship and a new friend.

Thanks for this reminder and information. I have always noticed little things that my youngest son does that makes me think he might be autistic and I know that only a doctor can diagnose it. My husband seems to think it's all just normal for him. My son throws tantrums at the drop of a hat. You can't reason with him or talk to him to help him understand until after he is done screaming and growling. Also, he used to (up until about a year ago) form a long line with every toy car, truck, or anything else with wheels instead of playing with them. God forbid that you touch any of them. Even now, music calms him and if that music is bothered in any way, again he will growl and yell. There are other little things, but I didn't mean to write even this much. Thanks for listening and understanding. =0)

There was no diagnosis when I was a boy in the 1950's. You were called stupid or retarded or worse. I was one of those children. I came to realize in later life that my symptoms were that of an autistic. I wrote my story in a novel entitled "The Closer's Song". The novel depicts how I overcame substantial existential odds to deal with my infirmity.
