I set this group up to be a welcoming place for people who must deal with autism in any form (and there are many forms). I hope you'll tell your story here and share your ...adventures....in dealing with the problems.
My husband and I have a 41-year-old son who was diagnosed as "autistic-like" back in the 1960s. At that time doctors refused to label him because there were no programs, no help, for the autistic. People with that label were just cast aside. Dr. Bruno Bettelheim had written a book about the causes of autism and he placed the blame square on the Mother. Abusive treatment, he said.
If you are the mother of an autistic child I hope you will refuse to accept that diagnosis. You have enough to deal with without that kind of guilt. No one knows what causes autism, but more likely than not, it's not you.
I plan to post a full account of our son's life and what we have dealt with in the past 41 years. in hopes that you can benefit from some part of our experience. Meanwhile I hope you'll share yours so I can learn from you, too.

Rimland was one of the first sane voices I encountered back in the early '70s!
We have been blessed with the best of professionals and care for our son, who is now 41 years old, owns his own home and enjoys day in, day out care by professionals who love him. He continues to be the biggest challenge and blessing of our lives.
