I discovered Jamie Cullum on iTunes about 3 years ago. If you have never heard of him it's ok. That's what I'm here for. To spread the word of a great contemporary jazz artist that does things his way.
Oh and did I mention he's british:

He's in the spectrum of musicians like Michael Buble and Peter Cincotti who are kind of jazz lite.
He's no Harry Connick Jr.
BUT he's a great talent.
That's not to say that Cullum's music isn't enjoyable. It is, but he's closer to Kenny G than Herbie Hancock.
My only point is that Harry is mostly Big Biand. His New Orleans jazz has only been a recent phenomenon. All his older stuff (from when his 'When Harry Met Sally Days to just a few years ago) has been closer to Big Band than to traditional jazz. In fact every time I have seen him in concert he has had his big band with him rather than a traditional small jazz band.
But Jamie has also gone away from his earlier traditional jazz sound. But it's the closest why to categorize him. Both artists have amazing concerts. Both have amazing qualities. But with Jamie you get a more personal experience just because he isn't nearly as big as Harry. Neither is better than the other. But thank god they are both here.
I don't know how you separate big band from traditional jazz, when some of the best jazz music (Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton, Jones-Lewis), is created by big bands.
I've listened to Cullum for years, and he's fine for what he does. I just don't think he's a top tier talent.
