"That song gets on my nerves," my niece said, the third time. "I don't like Billy Ray Cyrus."
My seven-year-old responded. "It isn't his only song."
"Don't care," the niece said. "I hate the song and him."
"Have you seen him dance?" Grandmother asked. "He shouldn't."
"But he sings good," my daughter said. "And he's a nice person."
My sister chimed in. "I hate his hair." The niece snickered and agreed.
I patted my daughter's leg. She fought a losing battle but I wanted to show support.
"He sings really good," my daughter said. "Did you listen to the rest of the CD? "Achy Breaky" isn't his only song. You'll like his blues."
"He should choose long or short, and wear his hair one length." This from a brother who apparently decided the conversation needed another negative voice.
My daughter fought tears. "Don't you get it? He's a singer and he sings good."
I rescued my daughter by changing the subject. She returned to the conversation on the way home. "Why did they act like they didn't hear me? They ignored everything I said."
"They didn't want to acknowledge anything positive about him," I explained.
"Every time I said something good, they said something bad." She stopped. "That's why you didn't say anything?" I nodded. She ended the conversation on this positive note. "Thanks for teaching me to be like you so I can like Billy Ray Cyrus."
Thank you, Billy.
(She's still a fan and needs a new guitar.)

250 words should be a MINIMUM, not a maximum, Kris.
And everything I've seen of Billy Ray indicates he is a very nice man. I loved him on the dancing show, I enjoy him on talk shows, I appreciate the way he talks about his daughter, and the people I've met who claim to know him have had nothing but good things to say about him.
Thank you, flit. Did you count my words? Exactly 250. That might be my biggest accomplishment.
Travis Tritt, who chided Billy for making country music all about an a** wiggling contest.
Nice tie in there.
This is a cute story Sandy. I had to run through the links to catch up on the rest, I hadn't read them.
Just like you, I'm writing it for Aaron's sake.
The guitar would go to him on his upcoming 18th birthday.
I just think it's fun to read the stories. There have been so many funny things said about BRC. It's sad really.
I completely agree with Briana, he CAN sing. I love the joking "I want my mullet back" on the newest CD. HA
Good story, Sandy.
This was a really cute story, Sandy. Smart child.
;-)
We go through things with our children throughout their lives, some good, some bad, and yet the lessons we have taught them come up in the strangest ways.
My son and his fiance are house-hunting, and I got very worried about some of their choices. He said to me "Mom, you raised me to be independent, and to go after what I want, so stop worrying about me. I'm doing a good job".
Now that is tear-worthy.
(I know you must have had about a 1000 or more words in your head. What did you do with 'em?)
