When I used to write for Epinions, we had what we called Write Offs. Someone would come up with a challenge and we would post our own article about it. Unlike these one-word games on Gather, these required thought, and everyone posted their own article in response. I liked that very much.
One of my favorites was when someone asked us what we would bring if we were to be stranded on a desert isle. I'd like to try that one here on Gather.
The Questions are:
If you were stranded on a deserted island, what would bring? List 8 songs, 1 book, and 1 luxury item. Feel free to pot as your own article and put a link to it in my comment section here if you want.
Personally, I would want lots of great lookin guys in kilts.. or loin cloths.. or something, but hey, we can do music too. Who knows, maybe one of those men will wash up while I'm cuttin' loose and singin' along to one of these....
What's really tough with this task is which songs? I could pick albums easy.. but ya narrow me down to songs and it gets extremely hard. Think I'd go for some upbeat tunes to keep my spirits up. We do also get one book and one luxury item. Well here goes....
~~~~~The eight songs:~~~~~~
1. Any Man of Mine ~ Shania Twain. I know, she sold out and all that. I don't care. I love this song! It's rocking and country at the same time, and can get me out of just about any bad mood..besides, I don't sound like a stuck pig singin' along to this one. I just love a song that puts a man in his place. heh.
Any man of mine'll say it fits just right
When last year's dress is just a little too tight
And anything I do or say better be okay
When I have a bad hair day
2. That's What I like About You ~ Trisha Yearwood. Another song with a great beat to it that's great for shaking off those blues. I love the theme of the song, which is to find a man that will be himself and let you be yourself too.
You can be soft, honey, you can be strong
Maybe that's the reason we get along
Everything you do, you do just right
You're tender in love, tough in a fight
3. We Will Rock You ~ Queen. Why this one? Because my favorite movie is A Knight's Tale and I've seen it so often that I could close my eyes to this song and watch it all over again in my head. Besides, I've just always really liked Queen and this is probably my favorite song by them.
Buddy you're a young man hard man
Shouting in the street gonna take on the world some day
You got blood on yo' face
You big disgrace
Wavin' your banner all over the place
4. Runaway ~ Del Shannon. Odd choice, no? Well, it has sentimental value. This song pretty much epitomizes my teen years. Oddly enough, it brings back memories of the good times. heh. Besides, I go through spells where all I listen to is oldies, so I gotta have at least one in there..
I'm a-walkin' in the rain
Tears are fallin' and I feel the pain
Wishin' you were here by me
To end this misery
5. Pour Some Sugar On Me ~ Def Leppard. Sue me, I liked all those bands from the 80s, hair and all! This particular song can go either way.. it can energize me or I can relax to it. Very versatile song, that.
I'm hot, sticky sweet
From my head to my feet
yeah
6. A Day in the Life ~ Beatles. Hey, ya just gotta have at least one Beatles tune, right? This one is very up without being overly so. Yes. A very good choice if I do say so myself!
Woke up, got out of bed,
Dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup
7. The Wizard ~ Uriah Heep. Just forever one of my favorite bands of all time, and this song in particular lets me close my eyes and dream. Hey, I'm into all that kinda wizards and dragons kinda thang anyway.
He told me tales
And he drank my wine
Me and my magic man
Kinda feeling fine
8. Smoke on the Water ~ Deep Purple. Another one to reminisce to. heh. Ok.. so I can't, like, actually remember much of what we did back then (hey.. It was the 70s man), but I know I had fun! This song just makes me feel young. Bite me.
Frank Zappa and The Mothers
Were at the best place around
But some stupid with a flare gun
Burned the place to the ground
I really like Time by Pink Floyd, but it's too slow for this trip, and I'd bring Uriah Heep's Demons and Wizards were I allowed an album. Then there's Nillson's You're Breakin My Heart, but that doesn't fit in with the whole Island thang at all. So, I guess this wasn't really a list of particular favorites in general, but favorites that have an up-beat theme and sound, or have relaxation at their core. Songs that cross genres so I won't get too burned out too awfully fast.
~~~~~The Book:~~~~~
Very tough choice here.. just one book? Hrmmm I'ma cheat here and name the Dragon Lance series. HA! With Tanis Half-elven beside me, I'll never get bored. Hey, rules were made to be broken, right? I adore Pratchett and Gaiman, but my old best friend is any volume of TSR written by Weiss & Hickman. My old favorite stand-bys. They've never let me down.
~~~~~Luxury Item:~~~~~
Is this where I get to drag in the kilted George Clooney or jousting version of Heath Ledger? Please? No? Damn. ok.. hmmmmm hell. Can I bring my jet skiis as a luxury? I already cheated once so I better play this one straight.. sorta. A movie then (and assume I can play it). Now do I bring A Knight's Tale that I already mentioned? Or do I go with Monty Python and the Holy Grail? Ok.. surprise me! I can't possibly choose between the two.
So there ya have it, what I would take with me to be stranded on an Island. Actually... can we really do this? Send me to that island? Please? Just for like a week or two... well, I can dream.......
Those are easy. Everyone should choose the same.
Funny you should mention Smoke On The Water, a new favourite of mine. Yeah those who know me WILL NOT BELIEVE THAT I'd say that, but it's a GREAT song!!
My Turkish friend Hande gave me a CD by a Turkish group called Local Strangers, and they cover this song. It's the singers who really don't have thick accents to speak of, but I can still tell they are Turkish, but the BACKGROUND instruments are all Turkish. I LOVE those Rock songs done with the Turkish instrumentations and arrangements. It's absolutely wonderful to listen to.
Now I have that song in my head!!
I'd want to bring stuff by Vladimir Vysotsky, Ivo Robic, The Red Army Choir, Vic Damone, and of course the Turkish group I mentioned.
