Tonight on FOX network affiliates a new science fiction movie will premier. "Virtuality" is a two hour series pilot that will air at 8 pm Eastern.
The basics of the story are this, the Earth is becoming increasingly uninhabitable do to violent climate change. A star ship has been built to travel to a distant star that may be inhabitable. The costs of funding the mission have been offset by contracting with television producers to create a reality show from the people on the crew and the events they face as the journey unfolds.
The title "Virtuality" is drawn from the fact that the astronauts will battle boredom by escaping into virtual worlds of their choosing. As the journey progresses, accidents start to happen, crew members are killed and it looks like a murdering saboteur is on board.
The promo video (embedded below) presents gripping action, stellar special effects, and some very fine acting.
This looks to be VERY good.
We will definitely be watching it in our home.

How enticing~
Thank you for the heads up~ =)
Thanks for the comments, Purrrrr.
What Purrrrrrrr said. Thanks.
Fancy meeting you here.
Always been a Sci Fi fan, WM, lol. Can't you tell over on LYR?
Get a room you two!
I have the DVR at the ready!!!We could sure use a new sci-fi series with some meat to it.
The IMDB entry is here http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1219836/
not much plot info but a fairly complete cast listing.
Bill, whatchoo been smoking hon? Its up there too...lol
we will probably check it out. thanks for the info!
Thanks for the comment, kimberly.
If you watched it, I'd be interested to hear what your thoughts were.
I watched it last night, wasn't too bad, I think it will get better as the story line begins. It was the first episode, it takes a few episodes to really get the story line. I tend to watch the next episode to see where it ends up.
A little choppy but I think it will clear up as the series begins.
I would agree with you that things would probably smooth out as the series continued, however, it is my understanding that a deal for the series has not been signed yet. Sources tell me that FOX wanted to see how well the pilot would do before committing.
Time will tell.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
It looks interesting, but I am pretty well put off by anything that has to do with Battlestar Galactica since the last season and ending was so terrible, in my opinion. I don't want to go through the effort to see all that and get involved just to be confounded in the end.
Sad to say, not too impressed with this, I watched it last night. Pretty decent CGI effects though, that's for sure.
Yeah, I agree with you Bruce. We watched the first half-hour, then switched to "Real Time" with Bill Maher. I went back to it after Donna told me she didn't care if I watched the rest of it without her. It just really seemed to lack palatable substance; until the last half-hour that is.
Well I watched it and so far I am not impressed. Basic problem for me is that so far I do not find any of the characters particularly likeable.
We were not impressed either, Wm. Such a shame, because the premise looked so promising.
There is no greater waste in movie or TV than to blow a good premise with bad writing.
I couldn't agree more. The characters just didn't "grab me", and thestory line was choppy, at best.
There seems to be a trend in writing for TV and the movies to embrace ambiguity and ambivilence. Writers seem to want to paint everything gray and avoid clearly establishing good and bad. On some level this may be an accurate reflection of the world as they see it. I prefer stories with a clear distinction between good and bad, heroes and villians.
If I want reality, I can turn on the news.
Thanks for the comments, WM.
My impression was that this was not so much bad writing as it was poor producing. As Donna said, the unfolding of the story seemed really choppy, which implies to my mind that the editing was poorly cobbled together. The last half-hour, however, seemed to flow well, both in presenting more intriguing character interactions and providing meaningful and seamless chains of events. From what I know, FOX has not yet signed on for developing the series.
I through this comment in as broad comment on movies in general not specifically this program. I was thinking in particular of NBC's Heroes.
I certainly agree with you about "Heroes". That show seemed to wander during its many seasons and I sensed a few incongruities in the last season which really bothered me. Character drift, like the fact that Hiro seemed to loose all the confidence he gained from traveling back in time to old China, really grated on me.
If you haven't seen it, go rent "Firefly" instead.
We own the series on DVD and "Serenity"...Want quotes? It's a wonder I haven't worn out the lot of them...I was even a "Browncoat" before the film was made...yes, I'm pathetic..lol
"We own the series on DVD...."
Me Too.
Joss Whedon needs to come back to his sci-fi roots with another series. FOX really dropped the ball when they cancelled "Firefly" after only 12 episodes.
I was a wee bit disappointed with the movie, in that he killed off Preacher and Wash("I'm a leaf on the wind.."), but I still wish there would be a sequel. I know its not going to happen, as most of the cast have successful series' roles themselves right now, but a gal can wish.
What about Dollhouse (though, yeah, it's not being broadcast at the moment)?
I watched this last night; it was all right.
Thanks for the comment, Ian.
Personally, I think you are being generous. I thought the show really dragged until the last half-hour. Up until then, all the characters and action seemed really flat.
I missed this.
Thanks for the comment, Janet.
I expect it will reappear somewhere, sometime; even if not on FOX. The plot was quite innovative.
OK, I watched it, and all I can say is the only thing it had different from a psycho killer thriller was they were in space. Sucked, so far.
Your description fits. Definately moving toward "psycho killer thiller" in space.
I think the sci fi got written to fit the story, not the story written in sci fi as a genre.
Hmmm, I'm trying to see what you mean, Ron.
To me, the show seemed built around the scifi, in that the journey through the stars, and the virtual worlds are pivotal to the plot. Granted, there did seem to be some genre homage points, such as propulsion by an "Orion Drive" which I see as a nod to Larry Niven's work, but things like that are common in the genre. Other than that, I just can't see how the story would float without the scifi setting(s).
thanks!
Watched Warehouse 13 on SyFy last night. I thought it was a decent pilot with promise even though it borrowed heavily from X-Files, and the Librarian and the ware house itself could have been lifted right out of Indiana Jones.
I happened to catch that too. And what's with this "SyFy"? Are they trying to be annoying? The show was your generic "SyFy" channel stuff; but there were charming bits. I am awaiting with great anticipation the new Torchwood miniseries coming up on BBC America in a couple of weeks.
"And what's with this "SyFy"? "
The marketing manager is trying to earn his pay. It is an exercise in branding that probably won't accomplish much.
