What the Vulcan?!
My husband and I did end up making it to the 7pm showing of Star Trek on Thursday night. We purchased tickets for the Digital screen showing. An employee came into our theatre 15 minutes before the movie was to start and announced that they were having trouble with the movie and it would probably not be fixed until the next showing at 10pm. So, we found seats at another theatre, that didn't sell out, to view on the "regular" screen. Thankfully, we did not pay more money for the digital showing but we were really looking forward to viewing it with better clarity. At our theatre they were showing Star Trek at 7pm and 10pm and at each show time 4 out of 5 theatres were sold out.
I laughed and I cried. I was surprised by the incredible special effects and action sequences. I was disappointed with some of the story line since it left holes and had some coincidences that were highly unlikely but to continue the story they had to move on. I don't agree with some of the messages that were portrayed in this movie such as "doing what feels right". Our feelings can be the most untrustworthy guide to making decisions. Where did your logic go Spock? There is a scene that may remind you more of Star Wars than Star Trek but it was nice to see something different. Those who keep up with the Star Trek universe will find some error with the technical details based on previous television shows and movies. Overall, it was worth the money to see it on the big screen which is something I normally opt-out on. Viewing this movie from DVD in my living room would not have done justice to the warp speed and other action scenes. Everything was so realistic that in some places you felt as though you were right there in the midst of the excitement. From the intricate detail of the ship to the intense action pieces, this fresh new take on Star Trek will please most and leave some wondering "What the Vulcan?"

Greg Summers wrote this in his comment below: "A new and fresh beginning. It leaves writers the freedom to remake everything because under the new story line. None of the old stuff happened. Got to love the whole time paradox thing. It opens up Star Trek to this generation of young people. I have to admit though I have to bid a sad good bye to the timeline of the old Star Trek." If I didn't tell you before this should answer your question. Thank you for the encouragement.
pretty good review, though I've not seen the movie yet... I am a long time Star Trek fan and one of the problems I have with this film, without even seeing it yet, is that Checkov is in it. The problem I have is that his character is so much younger than the others, the he should not be in this film at all.
Not only that but I felt that his character after a while was a tad bit annoying. Thanks for adding to the discussion!
Thanks for sharing. I think I'll save my rare opportunities to go to the
movies for Angels & Demons which is due out May 15th.
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!
You will have to share with us a review of the movie after you see it! Thank you for the compliment.
You never know, you might like it! But just in case, I would wait until it comes out at Redbox and check out Maggie's Freebies when she has a free promotion code for a free movie on Monday there. I think they offer it on the first Monday of the month to cell phones but I don't receive text on mine.
Did you get to see the movie yet? If so, what did you think about it?
Good review, thanks.
I'm looking forward to seeing it. I am a die hard Trekie.
I am going to see the movie with my son as soon as out schedules synch.
His schedule avatar and mine are negotiating at this moment.
Pretty funny, scheduling avatars! Have you been able to synch with your son yet to see the movie?
Not yet. His wife's on a business trip and he's got the kinder ( 4 and 1).
Maybe next weekend.
Great comment for our discussion, very detailed. I used a part of your comment to answer Beverly's question "did this movie stay true to Gene Roddenberry's ideals?"
I am glad that I wasn't the only one who was teary-eyed at the movies!
Did you go to see this with your daughter yet? We would love to hear what you thought of it! Some people thought the movie reminded them of Star Wars to much and I would like to know what you think.
I would not have been at the movies at opening weekend but my husband insisted! I usually wait until I can rent it for $1 at Redbox!
I thought the movie premise was a good one. The altered future was more than believable enough for me. And I think it briliantly launches a whole new decade in the franchise.
Thanks to Chris Pine, my "crush" on Captain Kirk has returned 30+ years later :-)
I apologize if I was too harsh with my last comment but I will try again.
Spolier: The writers wrote the "do what feels right concept" for Spock towards the end of the movie and I didn't get that from Kirk's character.
Thanks for adding to this discussion and Chris Pine was cute, wasn't he?
Don't be jealous!
kirk was out of control.
somehow that is supposed to make kids these days feel better, so it is worth paying jj abrams lots of money?
like you i had qualms.
there was stuff i liked and more stuff i didn't, but i was glad to see Star Trek so well appointed.
nice new music, new people, a good christopher pike, nice new effects.
but the criticisms you made are valid ... it was sad the decisions they made, and i do not like it.
Thanks for adding to this discussion and I agree with what you added.
True, it is a far stretch for Kirk to still grow-up to be the captain but not completely impossible. It certainly doesn't show a good role model to young ones watching. But I have had quite a past and I grew up better than it could have been. I am not a captain of anything but I see where it could be possible. Thanks again for adding to this post.
Spock character was screwed up I heard...always relying on feelings. I though Vulcans repressed their feelings? Right...right???
Anyway...I haven't seen this movie yet and I don't want to. I'd rather wait till it comes out on DVD...
Righ, right... not sure how Spock's character is going to come together if they continue the "new" story.
Yes, I usually wait for most movies to come out on DVD myself. I love going to Redbox and renting for $1.
Definitely got to see this. I guess I can imagine a younger Spock who hasn't learned to repress his feelings properly yet - and what a struggle surrounded by all those humans. But I'm looking forward to seeing how they imagine it.
We went. We loved it! I rather liked the premise - lots of scope for more.
I'm going to pass your review on to my Trekkie son-in-law.
Thanks!
I've been trying to get my son to wait until the movie comes out on DVD or at least until it reaches the dollar movie theater. We just couldn't wait to see this one.
