Does SF (not fantasy like Harry Potter) have any appeal to mainstream readers? The only SF writers that do, that I can think of, are Michael Crichton and Greg Bear. Greg Bear's novel Darwin's Radio was a general best seller. Crichton, with his other ventures, like ER and novels like Airframe, is known to mainstream readers, which give him a leg up. But SF, in general, does not sell well among mainstream readers.
Why not? If you are a mainstream reader, what is it about SF that turns you off? And I'm not talking about characterless--ray gun SF. There are many literary works by the likes of Frank Herbert, Stan Lem, and others that are as good, character development wise, as anything in general lit. Do you think that science, in general, is not a subject that most people enjoy or feel is relevant?
