The Sentinel's Watch

In a previous article today I wrote about the two year War of the Blueberries. It started several years ago when I told Papa I wanted blueberry bushes in my front yard so that in the morning I could just go out and pick them for my cereal. Papa is my wonderful retainer and sometimes actually does my bidding...he went out and bought three bushes. I was so pleased. But then the birds of the field were Socialists, especially the red cardinals and they decided that in the Evans Republic everyone should share the wealth. But like Stalin, what they really meant was that I do all the work of weeding, pruning and watering and they do all the eating. This year I decided to declare War on all buggers that envied my blueberries and stealthily stole into my garden. Did I not have soldiers at my beck and call. Sophie immediately, being my most trusted soldier, volunteered to be the Sentinel on Watch. Knowing how she tears heads off voles and field mice and tears moles apart and leaves them on the stone wall, I knew she would make a fine and worthy sentinel....no birds would get my blueberries...her ever watchful eyes would be steady on the enemies. What a fine soldier she would be...another MacArthur or Patton...always on the job. This afternoon, after Gathering a bit, I went down the pond to do my exercises. First I swim out to the raft in the middle of the pond doing the breast stroke and then back doing the side stroke...then I turn on some music and do some water aerobics. Blueberries as well as exercise will starve away the free radicals wanting to take up residence in my body. Coming up the hill, I thought I might check my trusty sentinel and to my surprise, this is what I found: Some trusty sentinel...more like Brown after Hurricane Katrina. I wonder if I should give Sophie a medal...or better yet send her to Washington to work for Bush.

Thanks so much for posting this to
my group
I've never seen a self-respecting bird when it comes to blueberries.
You really need to put the nets on...though (1) it looks like hell and (2) goes against my basic instincts of allowing everything to be free. As Papa says "Blueberries don't need freedom, Bob. You want blueberries or don't you?"
Your article is Featured in the Triple Name Club.
Speaking of berries, I had quite a Blackberry feed wandering through Ballard Park today. Almost didn't need to bring a lunch along. And the Black Cherries are just a couple of weeks away from being ripe, too. Yum!
I once had a kitty that was getting on in years and would watch chipmunks out of the corner of his eye as he lay on the patio. I swear they would almost run right under his nose. He couldn't be bothered any more.
I think that's Sophie's way of saying she wants to retire her post.
Sleeps soundly snoring softly
Birds dare not come near!
As I keyboard, that Sophie is up in my room asleep on my bed. How could I call out the execution squad on someone I sleep with every night. As for Othello, he didn't come home last night...must of found a new woman.
I love blackberries and cherries too. I must get down and see you.
My first thought when you made her the sentinel was that you were going to be stuck with *shudder* dead birds.
Thank you for posting to Make me Laugh
Very well written, I enjoyed the humor in this one.
Cute guy. Did Kevin get a transplant.
Thanks Jess, always try to amuse.
My rules have always been ignored by both my fur babies as well as my boys. Lol. I'll be over for the message...
Thanks Victoria for stopping by...pick a few blueberries before you go.
Magi says I can train baby cheetah's in the zoo in his latest article so maybe I'll bring a cheetah home to guard my blueberries.
