Question about gifts for Graduations

How much do you give for graduations? If giving cash do you give different amounts for junior high, high school & college?  Do you give a gift even if you are not going to the party or the graduation ceremony?

I have been invited to quite a few this year & will be out of town for one of parties. The other 2 are for kids that I use to babysit.

It really depends on my relationship with the child. If I am close and attending the party it could be anywhere from $20-$50 or the equivalent...if not or if I can't make the party, it is usually a token gift of some sort. I am invited to SEVERAL each year, so this is the system I use..Good Luck !

I'd give a different amount depending on what graduation it was. If it were a high school graduate I might give a gift card to a bookstore.

Christine, I agree with Karen and Shannon. It all depends to the relationship that you have to the student and/or the parents. I usually spend between 15 and 40$.

Thanks. 2 of the kids are kids that I use to babysit over 10 years ago. The other is there aunt who's 3 kids I babysit once a month or so.

If the child really meant something to me, I would get a gift even if I didn't go to graduation.

I would give $25 - $50.

I agree with the others. If they child is really important to me I would get a gift even if I was not going. If not I wouldn't worry about it. With graduations for everything (a regular child will have 5 graduations before they leave high school) it's important not to over extend yourself.

I think it is what you can afford, as the thought not the gift is what matters. If you have a few kids going all at once, it is tough. Things are expensive these days, and now when you give money, what used to seem like a lot, isn't anymore. It is a tough question you are asking.

I have 2 nieces that just graduated HS and I am sending them each a $25 gift certificate from a bookstore along with a really coolpen with a topper of a graduate with a diploma in hand that I got from party City on Sale for 50 cents each they were 1/2 price. You ought to check out your local stores they have placed alot of graduate stuff on sale recently.

I'd say more for college than high school. Junior high? Let them finish high school at least is my opinion. $100 for college, $50 for high school if they are fairly close, less if more distant connection.

for a high school I usually give like 25.00 for graduation,, i mean its big yes, but not huge deal but when it comes to college thats when I start giving around 40-50, but I think it all depends on you,, you shouldn't even feel obligated to give money ,, a card is just as nice and thoughtful

For someone I am close to I give $20-50 for HS. I would think that a bit more for college would be appropriate. I would just give a card if you are not that close, or a small gift. There are some great gift ideas out there. For a young lady we used to foster, we got her a charm bracelet personalized for her class year and her initials and put our names on it as well. She graduated from HS this year. The bracelet cost us just over $50.00 with the engraving, but it was huge for her. Most of the kids we worked with don't get through HS and they never go to college - she is enrolled in Ohio State for this Fall.

we give family $50 for high school or college, $25 for friends. If it's juniro high, we give a $10 or $15 gift card.
