I heard someone say recently “I don’t care about the education system, I don’t have kids in school anymore”. That remark upset me very much. I understand that a lot of people do not have kids in school. However everyone is affected by the quality of the educational system.
If a child quits school when he is old enough, he misses our on many opportunities that he could have had if he had graduated for High School. Lets assume that he cannot find a job or the job that he does find pays only minimum wage. Who do you think it going to pay for his family to have food on the table? Who is going to pay for his families medical care? That is right, we are by paying taxes. Now don’t get me wrong. I know there is the rare case of a person who drops out of school and still gets a great job. Those cases are very few.
I knew a young man who graduated from high school and could not read on a fifth grade level. Who will pay for his lack of proper schooling? Well lets analyze this. He cant get his learners permit to drive without taking a test. He cant read well enough to take the test. So what are the choices?
1. The government will have to pay someone to read it to him
2. The government will have to have a tape made to record someone reading the test.
Either way, it will cost money. Our tax money will pay for it.
Now lets assume that the neighborhood kids do not have quality teachers because the state does not pay enough to attract good teachers. Who will be affected?
1. The students because they wont be able to get into a good college.
2 The parents because they will have to pay higher tuition fees if the child does manage to get into a college. They will however miss out on a lot of scholarships that are for students with more knowledge.
3. The tax payers because many low income families need the governments help to pay for college
Higher educated students are less likely to get into problems with the law. They are better readers so they read. They are better skilled in math so they can manage their money and bills better. Who pays when they get into trouble with the law? We do. We pay for the jails and prisons. We pay the power bills, purchase the food and hire someone to guard them.
Everyone is affected when the educational system is not up to par. We are all affected by it. Even if we don’t have kids in school. I am not saying that all of the above circumstances just involve individuals who did not get a good education. I am only saying that it is more likely to happen to them
The better educated our citizens are, the stronger the communities are.
The U. S. Department of Education has enhanced its site to be more user friendly. The site has features for parents, students, teachers and administrators.
They have added a new tool to help students and families prepare financially for college. It has great new tools added that will help to determine how much college will cost.
They have information on the “ No Child Left Behind” policy. How are they doing with that?
Something that just blew me away was “In a recent study, US 15 year olds ranked 24th our of 29 nations in a math literacy and problem solving. That is not good to say the least.
According to the Achiever, May 2007 edition, ”A part of the president’s 2008 budget request, a proposed $25 million for the creation of the adjunct teacher corps would encourage well qualified math and science professionals to become secondary school teachers”. Where is this money going to come from? Taxes of course. If the students were better educated in Math and science, this would not even be discussed.
Education does affect all of us. We may not realize it but it does. Together, we can get the kids of our community a better education and save ourselves money at the same time. To learn more about education in the United States go to new user friendly U. S. Dept of Education site.

We, as a society are asking the best of minds, our countries future to learn in an environment that is antiquated and ineffective.
Public schools either need to revamp their structure, or they need to turn it over to someone else to figure out.
I just (today) came home from a home schoolers convention. Home schooling is not for everyone, in fact many MANY times it's done poorly. Still I found myself surrounded by many people who are teaching at home by default. They know that the public schools are failing, and they don't know what else to do but bring their kids home.
Schools can't even keep our kids safe, if children are in fear, they can not learn.
This is probably not a subject I should ramble too long on.
I do want to say that I am a reluctant home schooler but I give it what I can. I'm lucky that both Mark and I have a fair grasp on what we need to teach our kids. Every day that goes by, we are finding it more likely that we will eventually have all of them at home (currently I have two home and three in public school).
My husband dropped out in his senior year also. He could do better, it's true, but he is now making more money, without a diploma, than a lot of college graduates. Then again, he definitely works hard for the money.
I think that when people drop out and just laze around, it is just an excuse to be...welll......lame!
Although we should be concerned with dropouts, I think a lot of times it is not about them not wanting to learn or be a better part of society. Usually, there are mitigating circumstances that are often never foreseen, and dealt without the proper guidance, by adolescents.
Any suggestions Connie?
That was my point. I was acturally upset, very upset at that person's remark.
I think many people do not understand how the educational system is important to them as a citizen in the community, state and nation.
I was not complaining about the taxes that are used on the school system. In fact I think there is not enough tax money being spent on education. It is important and being neglected in many ways. We all need to get involved
I dont think the "No Child Left Behind" was even intened to work. It was just a political ploy as is much of the lies our politicians tell.
I agree, it is time to do something about it and everyone needs to get involved. There are many poeple who do not realize that the education that a child in the community gets DOES affect everyone in that community, state and country.
One of my brother's kids are homeschooled. In fact there are getting to more kids homeschooled in our area each year.
That coment that was made just rubbed me the wrong way. I was suddenly ready to give them a wake up call. LOL
I am really glad that you got you GED and college. My mother did too. She dropped out when she was 16 because she was pregnant with me. She had 6 children. I was the oldest. After we ALL graduated High School. My mother went back and got her GED and teaches art and crafts at the local elementry school. I am really proud of her too.
I did not mean to insult anyone and I did state in the article that eveyone does not fit into this mold but the sad truth is that man do.
I just think it is time to band together and do something that will better our children, grandchildren and all the children in the community, state and nation.
Thanks for comment.
The thing is that we should not be disappointed with the system. In a perfect world, it would teach encourage and nourish the children within its walls to become better leaders in our communities
That just is not happening as much as it should..
But many people can't see the value of spending tax dollars on preventative programs of any kind (the child who didn't drop out of school or the bridge that didn't fall).
That coment that was made just really upset me.
Happy Birthday. I hope you had a wonderful day.
I think she is sorta pretty too. :)
I work for the local NYC school system.
Education affects me daily.
The kids are our future.
Our Social Security payments are based on their earning potential.
Thanks. That person's comment just sent me into a tail spin and I had to get it off my chest. LOL
I agree but why cant everyone see that?
Do you find that everyone in your community support the educational system? Do you have alot of people who think, like the person in my article?
Thanks for stopping by. YOu are just the best.
I agree with you about the jobs. I wish every parent would take a more active role in the educatio of their child. Personally, I dont lke fast food. LOL
A county in West Virginia has a strawberry fair also. It is held the week before Memorial day each year. Sounds like you are going to have fun today.
I feel strongly about this issue and I hope there will be a viable solution - YESTERDAY!
I share your desire for the need to get something done "yesterday". Too many people dont see the need. It is sad really
I agree. Parents play a major role in the growth and development of their children. Sadly some partents could not care less about their children. School may be the only instruction that children like this receive in their lives.
I think that you have a very good point. Teachers are not appreciated anymore like they once was. I think this has been a problem for at least 10 or so years now. I think smaller classroom size would help alot. They seem to be consoladating into larger schools and it is not working
I am glad you are feeling some better. :) I am here if you need me.
Each year, the need for a better education becomes more important. Thanks for sharing a bit of your life with me.
