Lie - a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive; an intentional untruth; a falsehood.
Fib - a small or trivial lie; minor falsehood.
Deceit -the act or practice of deceiving; concealment or distortion of the truth for the purpose of misleading; duplicity; fraud; cheating
Whopper - a big lie.
Falsehood - a false statement; lie.
What makes a lie big or little? Why are there so many varying degrees of truth? Are little white lies really harmless? I think as a society we've deceived ourselves into thinking that in certain instances lying is okay. If that's the case at what point are you crossing the line? You tell someone they look good and they don't, that's okay. But if you lie to your spouse about cheating on them that's not okay? What if your harmless little white lie to someone about the fact that they look okay when they actually are hideous turns into embarassment for that person? Is it still okay because you were trying to protect their feelings? Let's start being honest with each other. Completely and totally honest. If you are the friend of someone and they sing horribly and want to know how they sounded, don't you think they'd be better off hearing it from you than a stranger? Tell the truth!

I don't think we should be brutally honest. We need tact and we need to know when to keep our thoughts to ourselves. There's a time to say, "You are a beautiful person and would look fabulous in a potato-sack, but that dress is just not flattering."
There are positive ways to convey truth and there are negative ways. I search for the positive and if I can't think of a good way to say it, then I keep my mouth shut. I don't go out of my way to hurt someone's feelings. Feelings are fragile and should be handled as such.
I try to always tell the truth, but I am not better than anyone else. We are all guilty of lying, whether it's the tiniest, little white lie or a BIG FAT one.
My daughter had a funny way of saying when she thought someone was lying. She would say, "WELL THAT'S A BIG FAT LIE AND A FROOBIE-DOOBIE-DOOBOB!!" She's a wordsmith like her mom. :-)
Great post Sarah. :-)

My grandmother had always taught me to tell the truth and I am disappointed when I don't, even to my husband.
I can't stand deception in others so I am not sure why I have started. It's not fair and it's not good for the soul.
In the end, It's better to just tell the truth and get it over with.
Thanks for this article. You reminded me again why it's good to tell the truth.
Prov 3:3,4 Do Not let Kindness and truth leave you; bind them around your neck.Write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will faind favor and good repute in the sight of God and man.
An honest person finds favor with God and Man. Our family has shortened that verse for our conversation.
TELL THE TRUTH AND TELL IT KINDLY :)
If we follow that rule we will tell even the hard truths in a way that it will build other up.
As far as little lies, I firmly believe that without having a description or word for any of these cases, or indeed societal opinion of them, we all, each and every one of us, just inherrantly know what is right and what is wrong without having to need a handbook!
