Explaining Social Security by George Dubya Bush - This May help solve the confusion!

None of them mention how much the business community hate this program and how they have now spent the last 35 years trying to save "business" from it, not protect U.S.A. citizen retirees.

That's just everyday "governmenteeze". The first order of "political bill of rights", NEVER give a direct or straight answer.
2nd, IGNORE the question and eventually it will go away. 3rd, if you tell a LIE long enough, it becomes truth.
4th, say WHATEVER it takes to get reelected!!!!
5th, never say what you nean and never mean what you say.

You hit the nail on the head, typical government figure heads, they promise the world than kick you square in the head, the politices are the same here in Canada, I wrote an article yesterday called Concrete Ghetto stating pretty much the same except I used other example, hopefully the PTBs will let us rant for a while longer before shutings us down. Correct me if I am wrong: I am under the impression that the problem with Social Security is that the monies brought in from our payroll taxes, meant to fund the pay-outs to senior citizens, the disabled, widows and orphans, rather than staying in a separate account and safely invested, or rather than being used for other governmental programs and repaid with bonds which will mature giving a good rate of return, has merely been used pretty much at will as part of the overall governmental spending.

Add to that the fact that Congress and the Senate do not pay into Social Security (they don't have to, we don't know why), but their retirement per year will be more than my husband and I have ever seen in our lives!
I am one of the disabled, did anyone know that as I "did" work for over 30 years but haven't worked since 1996, and I paid in that whole time, I'm not eligable for any monatery SSD! And, we're in CT, perhaps all the states aren't like ours is, this ibacked up, but if you ever have to apply for SSD, prepare for hell! First they send you what looks like a book to fill out, then they try to get you to go to their Dr's even though you have your own. Get an attorney, you'll need one to figure out things for you. Also, if you do go to their Dr's, they will say you are healthy, no matter what's wrong w/you, wait... unless you're dying. My Mother-in-law had an inoperable cancerous brain tumor and they tried to deny her benefits, I think she may have gotten one check before she passed away. Me? I have had 3 specialists do write ups on different disabilitys for me as SSD requested it because my attorney said do NOT go to their Dr's, as they're paid by SSD to contradict your condition, in other words, you're ok.
Then they'll turn you down 3x, and you get to the Administrate Law Judge - I'm going on over two years waiting to see one! With no insurance, and we live on my husbands SSD, thank goodness we have that little bit to live on. I've been told, since I worked in the wrong years, meaning not in the last few, that I will not be eligable for any money, which is OK, I truly need the insurance, and that's what we're actually going for.
Once my husband was approved for SSD (his was quick only a little over a year and a half), I'd had state insurance and it immediatly got canceled. And so it goes... meanwhile, the double-speak in Stevens article is right on, though things are actually much worse! Thanks for another good one, Steven!

Sad really, so many are so willing to ridicule the president of the United States. I wonder, just how intelligent YOU people would sound with a microphone in your face 24 hours a day.

The simple truth is, you don't have to be a great communicator, or speak the english language with eloquence to be a fine leader.

You might like to pretend such examples "prove" Bush is an idiot, but as far as the real world goes, it proves nothing of the sort.

I'd love to see ANY ONE OF YOU try to be lucid on the SS mess this country is in, much less explain how it all works.

Well I don't know if he is an idiot, but you have to believe that the English language has definitely taken a hit during the last 5 1/2 years. Its hard to lead a country, not to mention the most powerful in the world, if your statements are fully incomprehensible. For all of our sakes, they need to either keep him away from a microphone or start using him as a poster child to encourage special education funding.

To a great extent the job of President is exactly to be a communicator. He is not literally leading us into battle. He is not creating the laws. He is not "leading by example." The way a President leads his people is through the bully pulpit, through diplomacy, through politicking, through inspiration, and, hopefully, through learning the intricacies of specific public policies and explaining them so that the people can understand and act accordingly. The very fact that he has a microphone in his face so often (far from 24 hrs/day) should by now have made him a better communicator. Btw, I would be happy to be lucid on the SS mess, though it would be far too long for highjacking this thread. I get the feeling you would just tune me out though, since it would not be showing proper appreciation for your illustrious though communication-impaired leader.
