Tim Gunn makes his seasonal visits to the homes of the finalists a month into the two months they have to complete their collections. There is no doubt, these designers have to hit the ground running.
In Atlanta, we see Michael's cute house and are introduced to his new set of braces framing his pearly whites. Later he takes us to a cousin's house where we meet the rest of his clan. Michael states that since he was nine he wanted to be a designer and his family has always "had his back." He father, retired from the military, mentions that he always thought Michael would be a beautician. All of this makes fans like me say, "Aw," while we note that he only had about two pieces done and is going for an 'urban safari' look.
Tim walks to Laura's place next. She amazes him with all she has done, especially considering she is pregnant with her sixth child (fifth son in a row). He warns her that her collection isn't youthful enough, but I admit I like it, even if it is more of a fall collection than spring.
I'm amazed to learn that she is originally from New Orleans. Maybe it's me, but she just seems to be the stereotype of the New York woman born and breed. Her husband returns with the brood and the youngest offers Gunn the gift of turtle poop, from his lost turtle no less. Gunn runs away squealing like a little girl.
Gunn then ventures to Miami, the tropical home of Uli. This is the first time the audience learns anything about her history and I was moved and wish I had learned more about her earlier. She is an immigrant from the former East Germany and confesses that she fell in love with Miami while watching 'Miami Vice' as a child. She says kind things about being an immigrant and how America is the land of opportunity and it made this American misty eyed, until I wondered if she is planning to have a child as an anchor baby. If this is the case, I say make her go back to Mexico! (The last part was a little Gather humor.)
She has a few pieces done and states that she is doing a 'beach safari' esthetic. Do I detect a theme?
Finally, Gunn visits L.A. where we meet Jeffery, his girlfriend (with funky 1981 'Blondie' bass player hair) and their child, whom Jeffery says he loves more than any other human alive, thus allowing us to deduce that he fancies his girlfriend much less. It would be unfair for me not to state that he openly talks about his drug abuse and suicide attempt and the story is touching, especially how he ties it to wanting better for his son.
Apparently, Jeffery was a busy boy. Not only was he designing for his Bryant Park show, but also some other collections that he was already doing for his regular 'rock-n-roll' clientele. Gunn loves what Jeffery has done with the few pieces in his collection. He has one dress that has zippers all over it and Gunn raves, but I'm just not so sure, it reminds me of the worst of the 80's coming back to haunt a la Linda Blair sort of way.
Five days before the Bryant Park show, the finalist reunite in the same hotel suite. The next day they begin booking models and doing fittings. Jeffery is suspiciously finished with his whole collection, which draws the ire of Laura. Michael and Uli chime in their reservations and Laura informs Gunn there might be a problem.
One of their concerns, beyond just Jeffery's casual attitude, is the workmanship on pieces like his leather pants, which he didn't display while at Parsons. Everyone acknowledges that cheating is a difficult thing to prove, in the end it all comes down to Jeffery's receipts (the designers each have a budget of $8,000). Further, nothing is mentioned about the mom communiqué.
I'll end on a few thoughts about Laura. I like her because she has the guts to tell her truth regardless of the perception. She admits that she doesn't like Jeffery, but that alone isn't her motivation. She's a smart woman, she knows accusing another designer of cheating can blow up in her face, yet she does it anyhow. The others' support her revelations, but they aren't the ones to stick their necks out even when they have as much to lose over the possibility of Jeffery's cheating. Jeffery targets her as his nemesis, though he has to understand that by not having even a button to sew on, the audience is asking the same thing.
Next week's episode will be quite telling. I'm almost to the point of not caring who wins as much as anticipating if Jeffery is guilty or not.

What was up with Laura's early morning interview and all that make-up while she's still in bed.
But I wish your article weren't so slanted against Jeffrey. Didn't Tim say that everyone is innocent until proven guilty?
I really doubt that Jeffrey would comet his far and be so stupid to mess it up by having someone else do the stitching. No one sees the seams on the runway anyway!
Also, I think Laura could've been nicer in posing her accusations. She came across as a huge bitch, but I still love here!
Michael showed guts when he confessed to Jeffrey that he had suspicions too, but I've always resent how Michel is the favorite golden child of all the judges, plus his final collection is horrendous. Just awful. I will be happy as long as anyone other than Michael wins. But i have my money on Jeffrey.
La Lady...where are you?
Cindy is all the Rage, I don't necessarily want him to suffer, but he hasn't done himself any major favors to win audience approval. It was touching to hear him talk about his life, but I think he still has a lot of issues and is very immature in how he handles himself.
Leah, thank you 'turtle poop and fan hitting' was a momentary gift of inspiration, I wish I had more moments like that.
Carol, I agree. As Kitty pointed out, the way they edited it made it seem like he was out of the competition, but sometimes clever editing can mean just the opposite. It is a real wait and see.
Juniper, thank you.
Cheryl, I admire Laura for speaking up and not really monkeying around with the issue. Granted, she doesn't like him, but I think too many times people kind of let things just go and then later they kick themselves for not speaking up. He may very well be innocent, but the appearance of not doing anything, plus the opportunity to do so with his connections, is something that needs to be investigated.
I don't know what is up with her makeup. I wondered that too. Maybe she has it tatooed on.
Natalie, his expertise with leather is a compelling argument. I would also add that he seemed like one of the designers that never had a problem with getting something done on time. He might be innocent. The situation though was that he came to Fashion Week with hardly anything to do. He had a lot of separate pieces, plus another show room collection, and he had two months to do everything!
I don't know if it would have been wise to go to Jeffery about her suspicions first. There is so much riding on this show for all of the designers that I don't know if it would have been prudent for her to do so. She did tell him afterwards that she was the one who went to Tim Gunn, then again it isn't like Jeffery is so much of a flake that he wouldn't have figured it out or at least seen it on the show. I think it was a difficult situation and she handled it the best way she could.
Courtney, the thing about who wins is so up in the air. We all knew that Michael would win the fan favorite check, but really, it could be anyone's game.
Melinda, from what I have seen of his collection on the Internet I like. I mentioned that I'm not a big fan of 80's anything, but it has been twenty years and so much of fashion is retro. Besides that green stripped zipper dress, I thought the rest of his collection was cute. Of all the designers who could have seriously finished as fast he would have been on top of my list, but none of this bunch were particularly slow.
D Q., I agree. They let Laura take the lead, and she was the one who commented first, but all of them have as much to lose if Jeffery went outside the rules. Speaking of which, I think it would be nice if the fans knew all of the rules to begin with. Does anyone else have any ideas about this?
Lauren, he might be innocent. I don't think he's the smartest tool in the shed, thus I don't know if he cheated and didn't think that it would look suspicious that he had nothing to do as everyone else ran around like chickens without heads, or if he truly is innocent and didn't notice the 'states' people were giving him. It's a wait and see mystery. It would have been beter for Laura not to dislike him form the get go. I think she came off bitchy that way, thus when she went to Tim Gunn she looked double bitchy. I agree she has had her bitchy moments.
I'll comment on the rest of the comments later, but I have to run. Sorry I haven't been around today.
Jeff has always been one of the few that had finnished before everyone else. Given that they have such a short time during most challenges that says a lot! So seeing that he had two months to do 12 pieces instead of 24-48 hours to make each piece, I say it wouldn't be hard to sew perfection.
JK, I think her oldest is a daughter and she's had boys ever since. Remember that younger picture of her with a baby? The baby was wearing a girly headband. It's odd that we haven't seen her daughter though. I think all of the desigers appeal to certain types of lifestyles. Just based on what I've seen from the shows, I thought Jeffery's collection was the one to beat.
Kitty, I remember that about Jay! Kara had someone do her shows non gratis (spelling?) and that was an issue. She had to get receipts as if they sold her a $500.00 boot for $5.00. Once again, it is a wait and see. I'm sure the producers will only act against him if they have solid proof and then they are going to have to explain to the audience just what rule he violated. Judging from the size of his work space he obviously has some level of success out in La-La Land. I can't see how he would not have some employees working for him if he is doing his own showroom considering the little time he had to do everything. The last two seasons all of the designers have had about about six months to do their collections.
I just want to add, thank God they didn't throw in a new piece for them to design. Last season I felt for the finalist because they hadn't had any sleep and they were like Zombies for their Bryant Park show.
Kitty and Lisa - I had forgotten the issue with Kara. I do agree the accusations will be hard to prove. I wonder, though, if the judges will know about the allegations even if not proven? That could definitely influence their vote even with no proof. It's like a judge telling the jury to disregard a statement that shows guilt. Once it's out, you can't really take it back. I do agree that the suspense over what happens to Jeffrey is much more exciting than the contest now!
I'm a new fan. Will we have to wait until next summer for season 4?
(Is there a top chef hangout here on gather? - sorry, but I'm still rather new)
Natalie, I see your point. If he did cheat then I think the producers should be slapped on the wrists for not catching it and making the contestants themselves speak up. I really like this show, and one of the reasons I do is because the core of it isn't about competing with others as much as bringing the creative best out in yourself. I think the show is probably having a tremendous impact on children who love fashion who don't live in the traditional fashion capitals. A friend and I were just talking about how if PR was on when we were 10ish we would have been eating and breathing Parsons design school.
Sorry, about the side note, my point about Jeffery is that I don't think it is all that interesting to add scandal to the show. I think there is enough drama trying to get a collection together and making sure the models aren't run over by buses (like Vincent's model was) or plain wacky (the crazy blond model from first season). If he did cheat then it mares the competition. Truly, I hope he didn't, but I do admire Laura being upfront about her concerns. There may have been a more diplomatic way of doing it, but she did express her concerns, just be thankful she isn't Wendy Pepper. Now wouldn't that have been fun?
I totally agree that if he did do it then same on him. But I feel that even if he's proven not guilty, and maybe even goes to win, that now people are going to say well, he probably did cheat they just couldn't prove it. And that will be such a shame.
If he does get to show I really fill like it's going to be between him and Laura. Man, 5 more days to wait...it's going to drive me crazy!!!
Mary, I think part of the problem was that they went into turn around production so fast for this season. Season 2 had barely ended, or hadn't even ended, and they were casting for season 3. I think the producers do have to check on the designers on a regular basis, and I do think that is sad. Yet, I think taking off my shoes for air travel is sad, but I do it because I know it is necessary.
I agree that there was too much drama and not enough about the clothes. I also would like to see the Bravo Project Runway site have better photographs of the clothes. A lot of the time, and you know this to be true, an outfit that looks great in person, looks horrible on film, especially on video. Often on the website I'm amazed at how hard it is to view the complete look because the lighting is too dark. I hope for 4 they pictures of what the garment looks from the front, the side, and the back.
How has it come to be that the anticipation of a TV show brings me such joy? I am a sad, sad case!
I will be with you in spirit!
Jeff won and I'm so happy!!!!!! I was screaming last night! I loved his collection, I loved that he cried, I loved his cute little boy. I love Jeffrey! Uli's clothes were beautiful but I agree that the collection did not really flow. Laura's was amazing also but very onesided and Michaels was a mess. I can't wait to hear back from you!!
