The Military Stakes in Iraq

...and will you stop the next fool trying to persuade the people that another invasion in another country is so important that the search for weapons coming up with nothing, means totally zilch!?

When I hear Michael O'Hanlon talk about "nation building" and the inadvisability of a drawdown in Iraq, I keep thinking how dashing and gallant he himself would look in a uniform. But then I wake up and realize that the neocon chickenhawks will have no truck with putting their own fates on the line. Better to play Stratego with the lives of other peoples' kids while mortgaging and bankrupting our own nation's future through the hideous cost of this hopeless enterprise. The Sunni hordes are indeed just biding their time until the time is right for a Middle Eastern Tet. It is not possible to civilize a region so completely in thrall to religious madness. But, hey, as long as your own life is not on the line and you have a nice, comfortable, think-tank sinecure, let's keep the Great Game going. Disgusting. Utterly disgusting...

The surge failed since its avowed purpose was to allow the government to accomplish some much-needed political moves and they did none of them. The violence abated temporarily and is now creeping upward again. The government still has done zip and it's months after the end of the surge. I notice that Mr. Bush and the Republicans sort of forgot that part and have conveniently changed the stated purpose of the surge. It's nice when you can move the goal posts like that so you always score.

I am very disillusioned with this war and for people being so apathetic about it.

It seemed like it made a difference. What you hear is dependent on the point of view of the person who is talking about it mostly it seems.

It has made a difference but ofcourse those who oppose the war won't ever see anthing good coming out of Iraq.
