This was just posted by the New York Times:
An American diplomat in Sudan and his driver were shot to death early Tuesday as they were coming home from a New Year's Eve party in Khartoum, the capital.
In Washington, the Agency for International Developmentidentified the diplomat as one of its officials, John Granville, 33,originally of Buffalo. American officials said it was "too early totell" if the shooting had been random or planned, but Sudaneseofficials said the circumstances were suspicious, especially becausegun crime is rare in Khartoum, considered one of the safest cities inAfrica.
Please read the remainder of the article on the New York Times web site (registration may be required but it's free) and take a moment out of your day to remember Mr. Granville and his service to our nation. Whether or not this was a murder or an assassination, it's a terrible affront to our nation and I hope that our leaders have the chutzpah to deal with this in an appropriate manner once the investigation has been completed.
What a horrible way to begin the New Year! :(
Thank you.

Why doesn't one European country with some backbone just invade this horribly inept country? Why are they always looking to us to do the heavy lifting? They can all see we're bogged down in Iraq and Afghanistan, and yet all they do is bitch. No action at all.
as well as worry we will be in there before the election.....
and coming so soon after the bloodshed in Pakistan
I see you too have had gather 'imps' running the words together!
I think that a military mission to Darfur would be more akin to why we went into Bosnia than Iraq, so I wouldn't have as much of a problem with it. Already, nearly 1/4 of a million people have been killed in this genocide, and it must be stopped!
