In the heart of Baghdad's Green Zone, US and Iranian diplomats posed for the cameras yesterday. It was the biggest break in nearly three decades in the deep freeze between Washington and Tehran. But what it means is still anybody's guess.
This month, US warships were war-gaming off the coast of Iran. Tehran was arresting Iranian-Americans on espionage charges. Tehran's nuclear program was reported blazing full-steam ahead. Dick Cheney was standing on an aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf, talking tough.
Listen to a discussion on On Point about the US now face-to-face with Iran, the Mideast's rising power.
Is talking with Iran the way out of Iraq? Would you trust a deal with Tehran? Might we have to?

The bulk of our military is bogged down in an aggressive war of occupation in Iran's neighbor Iraq. This alarms Iran and motivates them to intervene in Iraq. Tying us down even more. We also covertly intervened in Iran in 1952 to install the Shah. Iran has much reason to mistrust us. And Dick Cheney standing on the deck of an aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf doesn't help matters either.
If we hadn't squandered our military and moral advantage after 9/11 and if 30 years ago we had stuck to developing coal gasification technology we might not be in this mess. But of course Exxon, Mobil, Reagan, Bush and Cheney knew better than me.
We need a strong and experienced president in 08. A JFK (but not his a/h brother), an FDR, even a Truman. We won't get that of course. Things will get worse before they get better.
