I am a native New Yorker and was living in the Midwest in 2001 and am still there now. My greatest fear that morning was for my brother who had regular meetings in the WTC complex. He was scheduled to meet there that day. A few days later I discovered his meetings were re-scheduled for the day before that. As I sat there watching television it was beyond any sense I had that those two magnificent buildings would actually fall completely to the ground. I wondered what and who was next. By this time we had heard about the Pentagon and one other flight that had gone down (now known as United Flight 93). I listened as air traffic all over America was shut down. I keep waiting for whatever was coming next.
In a sense I think we are all still waiting for whatever that may be; the events of the last few days may have been the big NEXT except for the dedicated people watching for and dealing with these threats. I fear that some place like my little city in the Midwest might be on someone's list just to prove that they can hurt the heartland. I still fly, and travel to places where large numbers of people congregate like our theme parks. But there is always the little bit of fear way back in my mind; I know I am more fearful of the guy driving along side of me but the events of 9/11 have put that constant small sense of fear in many of us. It joins the likes of bird flu as one of the little fears we hardly know we deal with each day; the fears of things that are outside of our control. Thank God for that – the fact that these events now become one of our little fears removes from the perpetrators the power of FEAR they thought they held over us. We are much more resilient than they may have thought; they have failed and will always fail. Despite the enormity of the event at that time it distills itself into one of our many little fears that we can and do deal with daily.

John D., thanks for your superb article! We're human, we're mortal, we could get hit by a truck tomorrow, so who needs terrorists, bird flu, or any of the other threats around us? We can either hide under the bed in fear, or we can go outside and live our lives. After all, if it ain't one thing, it's another.
As for the people who believe it was an inside job...give me a freakin' break!
I am a survivor of the 9/11 tragedy and still to this day am dealing with many of the fears and disturbing memories...
