I love late August mornings. The light is gold, the air is cool and clear, the grass is deep green and the trees are already showing yellows and reds. With hay in the barn and wood ready to burn, I'm prepared for winter. But when I heard Cathy Wurzer on the radio this morning say that the 2007 Farmer's Almanac is predicting a snowy and colder than ever winter, the golden morning turned bittersweet. I'm not really ready. I want to hold tight to August and September -- maybe even October -- and make them last forever.
But what I really want to talk about is the weather—or, rather about University of Minnesota climatologist and meteorologist Mark Seeley who talks about the weather on Minnesota Public Radio's Morning Edition at or around 6:50 AM every Friday morning. He will be in Duluth in September to sign his new book, Minnesota Weather Almanac, published by the Minnesota Historical Society Press. In the book, Seeley attempts to describe the history of weather as far back as 1806. In addition, it includes the best questions from the State Fair Weather Quiz broadcast annually the past ten years on MPR's Midday program. Seeley will be at Northern Lights Books and Gifts in Duluth's Canal Park at 1:00 on September 9.
I haven't read the book, but would love to hear from anyone who has or wants to review it.
PS. You can take this year's State Fair Weather Quiz or listen to the broadcast at the MPR web site.
